    IOM Future of Nursing Report (2010): “Nurses
    should be educated with health professions
    both as students and throughout their careers
    in lifelong learning…” (p. 2)
IOM Recommendations
1) Remove scope of practice barriers
2) Expand opportunities for nurses to lead
    and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts
3) Implement nurse residency programs
4) Increase proportion of nurses with BSN degree
   to 80% by 2020
5) Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by
   2020

Problems in our Healthcare System Lack of care coordination ⇨ duplication of services, increased costs Increasing complexity of health care National and International organizations recommendations (e.g. WHO, Accreditation, IOM) IOM Future of Nursing Report (2010): “Nurses should be educated with health professions both as students and throughout their careers in lifelong learning…” (p. 2)
