4. Thorn Lighting Electronic Transformers & Tungsten Halogen display fittings Company Registered in England no. 6546063 Development, Design and creation of prototypes to evaluate, test and eventually manufacture electronic transformers, such as in-line toroidal and compact E-I transformers. These transformers were used in retail outlets and display systems for controlling the first generation of Tungsten-Halogen display fittings. Development, test and committal for manufacture of inverters for customers such as British rail and various caravan manufacturers. Work involved heavy involvement in PCB design and manufacture, overseen by manufacturing team members. PCB ’ s were standard and Hybrid design, incorporating on-site surface mount design and manufacture input. This was also first time for heavy involvement in accelerated testing and resolution of warranty issues due to poor quality PCB design and manufacture, leading to customer feedback and data analysis to redesign, re-test and re-manufacture where necessary.

This entailed constant competitive awareness through close marketing ties, and frequent design/marketing reviews. This forum allowed the early creation of “ Cut n shut ” prototypes for evaluation by design, patent attorneys and marketeers, for initial feasibility studies. If viable, this allowed further prototyping and resource, to allow a workable project timeline to be established and user research if required. Competitor analysis and user requirements were then formalised into design specifications. The project was then allowed onto the official work scheduling and flowed through from CAD into tooling and finally production. As a Senior Design Engineer, I was involved in the above, as participant and eventually leading the process, to contribute to incremental growth where possible, and overall helping to increase the household portfolio operating income by 200%.
