2. Digital Fabrication A design process that involves the creation of vector-based designs which are cut on fabrication machines. Using subtractive methods, this process is primarily based on the concept of designing aggregate pieces that are then assembled to create a 3D structure. (AKA “Fabbing”, “FabLab”)
10. K-12 CULTURAL PAPERCRAFT 2 D Papercraft & Cultural Expression: Design a paper cut out that expresses a cultural theme This lesson allows for exploration in comparing and contrasting Mexican PapelPicado and Polish KurpieWycinaki …two similar cultural expressions from opposite regions of the globe. Inspiration: Bray’s Crossing New Hope Housing Relatable: Students can relate to such objects either by being a part of the Mexican American culture or by seeing them integrated as decoration around town. This allows for deeper cultural exploration, as well as positive and negative space, and other design elements and principles.

13. K-12 PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING 3 D Recyclable Functional Design: Design a functional chair out of recyclable cardboard This lesson in real-world digital fabrication design involves the ability to design 2D aggregate pieces to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Inspiration: Dornob Flat-Pack Furniture. Relatable: We all have furniture, therefore this is something that is easy for students to relate to. Linking it to social issues, such as recycling and functional design allows students to explore ways to creatively think outside of the box and explore modern design.
“Digital fabrication (also known as “fabbing”) represents the next step in the digital revolution. After years of virtualization, with machines and atoms being replaced by bits and software, we are coming full circle. Digital technologies like rapid prototyping, laser cutting and CNC milling now produce atoms from bits, eliminating many of the limitations of industrial production processes. Once prohibitively expensive, such technologies are becoming increasingly accessible, pointing to a future where mass customization and manufacturing-on-demand may be real alternatives to mass production.” (http://hcgilje.wordpress.com/category/workshop/)Images:Aggregate pieces from rethink architecture - http://rethinkarchitecture.blogspot.com/2008/08/digital-fabrication-examples.htmlRestaurant - http://sweet-station.com/blog/2009/11/design-with-cnc/Chairs, from Design and the elastic mind - http://architecture.tulane.edu/events/exhibitions/543CNC machine - http://metalworkingmachine.net/2011/03/03/cnc-machine-wood/
Steven Holl Architects wanted to do experiments in porosity and decided to take on the Porosity project. (http://dudye.com/experimenting-with-porosity)Random porosity involves a non-linear repetition of individual components in varying scales. Recursive porosity employs mathematical strategies to generate infinitely complex patterns.
Wall murals by Carmen Lomas Garza depict papelpicado, a Mexican cut-paper folk art, as well as provide decoration for the 500-foot sound wall.Singing/Las MañanitasGarden/JardinPaper Cutout/PapelPicadoDance/Baile(http://www.newhopehousing.com/brayscrossing/garza.html)
The murals not only provide beauty on the outside, but also on the inside, where they create interesting shadow patterns.
I think that any art project needs to be inspired by something and needs to be relatable, otherwise students, particularly high school students, will not be engaged.Wycinaki (vee-chee-non-kee)Images:
This second example is a digitally fabricated 3D sculpture at the University of Houston College of Architecture. Designed around the existing pond, this grotto was created to serve as a public meditation spot. It is designed out of aggregate pieces of sheet metal which were generated using parametric design (computer generated designs based on algorithms).
