All our knowledge
has its origins in
our perceptions.
O Leonardo DaVinci
Knowledge Management
with a Wiki!
What a Concept!
Introduction
O Hi my name is Roxanne gibbons this podcast
was created Aug. 10, 2013 in Cormack, NL
O The purpose of this podcast is to discuss how
conversational technology can be used to
manage knowledge, based on the
constructivist theory of learning.
O First we have to define some terms.
Knowledge
O Knowledge is power.
O Information is power.
O The secreting or hoarding of
knowledge and Information may
be an act of tyranny camouflaged
as humility.
O Robin Morgan
What is Knowledge?
O Churchman(1972) claims that "knowledge resides in
the user and not in the collection of information.”
O Alavi & Leidner (1999) state:
“Knowledge is personalized, in order for one person’s
knowledge to be useful to another individual, it must
be communicated in such a manner as to be
interpretable and accessible to the other
individual.”(p.6)
So how can we access and manage knowledge ?
What is Knowledge Management?
O Knowledge management is the process for acquiring,
organizing and communicating knowledge of
employees so that other employees may make use of it
to be more effective and productive in their work.
(Alavi & Leidner, 1999)
O How can we communicate knowledge?
How can we communicate
Knowledge
O A number of new communications
technologies have emerged in recent years
called conversational technologies.(Hsu, 2007)
O Ferris & Wilder(2006) claim conversational
technologies provide opportunities for
learners to work and learn collaboratively,
engage in discussion, and learn in new and
innovative ways.
What is Conversational Technologies?
O Conversational technologies promote a sense of
interaction with the “ownership” of knowledge
using electronic tools. (Gronbeck, Farrell and
Soukup, 1991)
O Conversational technologies include a wide range
of systems and software like e-mail, instant
messaging, web pages, discussion forums, video
and audio content/streaming, wikis, and blogs.
(Hsu, 2007)
Constructivism
There are many benefits to the use of
conversational technologies or sometimes
refereed to as and constructivist tools in
education.
Constructivism is the dominant theory of the
last decade and supports construction of
knowledge by the individual. (Karagiorgi, Y., &
Symeou, L.,2005)
Constructivist learning
O Jackie Miers in a report on a Learning Management System for the
Technology School of the Future, defines constructivist learning, as
cooperative, collaborative, and conversational.
O The constructivist theory emphasizes providing learners with
opportunities to
O interact with each other to clarify and share ideas,
O seek assistance
O negotiate problems
O discuss solutions
O integrate new ideas with prior knowledge and
O construct their own knowledge that they can transfer to new
situations.
O These opportunities are available through conversational
technologies and also needed for knowledge management.
Question:
O What is the solution to knowledge
management based on the constructivist
learning theory?
Answer:
O The Wiki
Wikis
O “A wiki is an online information resource that
is authored by interested and knowledgeable
persons from around the world.” (Hsu, 2007
p.80)
O “A wiki provides an extremely fast and
efficient way to collaborate and communicate
knowledge among virtually anyone interested
without the constraints of place or
time.”(Reinhart, 2005)
What is a Wiki?
O Wikis promote collaboration and
interactivity. (Hsu, 2007)
O The open wiki feature allows for
communication, collaboration and the
documentation of what is collectively
considered pertinent knowledge.
(Reinhart, 2005)
O Wikis provide a dynamic system for
knowledge capture, and are able to evolve
with changing needs.
Conclusion
Conversational technology can be used to
manage knowledge, based on the
constructivist theory of learning, the wiki is
an excellent constructivist tool that is easily
integrated as part of an employee’s
/learner’s work process to facilitate
knowledge sharing and construction.
Thank you
What is an EPSS?
O FuTure reSearch areaS
O There are many benefits to the use of
O conversational technologies and constructivist
O tools for educational use. More research
O needs to be done in terms of identifying
additional types of applications and
O Uses and how to more effectively
O identify and apply new approaches to learning
O with the aid of these kinds of
technologies.(Hsu,2007)
O Some of the broader research issues that can
Seymour Papert
O You can’t teach people everything
they need to know…
O The best you can do is position
them where they can find what
they need to know when they
need to know it.
Key Concerns Related to
Knowledge Management
O Information
O Building large amounts of data into usable form
O Avoiding overloading users with unnecessary data
O Eliminating wrong/old data
O Ensuring customer confidentiality
O Keeping the information current
O Management
O Getting individuals to volunteer knowledge
O Bringing together the many people from various disciplines
O Determining responsibility for managing the knowledge
O Technology
O Determining infrastructure requirements
O Keeping up with new technologies
O Security of data on Internet (Alavi & Leidner, 1999)(p15)
O “Hoards of information are of little value: only
that information which is actively processed in
the mind of an individual through a process of
reflection, enlightenment, and learning can be
useful.” (Alavi & Leidner, 1999)

  • 1. All our knowledge has its origins in our perceptions. O Leonardo DaVinci
  • 2. Knowledge Management with a Wiki! What a Concept!
  • 3. Introduction O Hi my name is Roxanne gibbons this podcast was created Aug. 10, 2013 in Cormack, NL O The purpose of this podcast is to discuss how conversational technology can be used to manage knowledge, based on the constructivist theory of learning. O First we have to define some terms.
  • 4. Knowledge O Knowledge is power. O Information is power. O The secreting or hoarding of knowledge and Information may be an act of tyranny camouflaged as humility. O Robin Morgan
  • 5.
  • 6. What is Knowledge? O Churchman(1972) claims that "knowledge resides in the user and not in the collection of information.” O Alavi & Leidner (1999) state: “Knowledge is personalized, in order for one person’s knowledge to be useful to another individual, it must be communicated in such a manner as to be interpretable and accessible to the other individual.”(p.6) So how can we access and manage knowledge ?
  • 7.
  • 8. What is Knowledge Management? O Knowledge management is the process for acquiring, organizing and communicating knowledge of employees so that other employees may make use of it to be more effective and productive in their work. (Alavi & Leidner, 1999) O How can we communicate knowledge?
  • 9. How can we communicate Knowledge O A number of new communications technologies have emerged in recent years called conversational technologies.(Hsu, 2007) O Ferris & Wilder(2006) claim conversational technologies provide opportunities for learners to work and learn collaboratively, engage in discussion, and learn in new and innovative ways.
  • 10.
  • 11. What is Conversational Technologies? O Conversational technologies promote a sense of interaction with the “ownership” of knowledge using electronic tools. (Gronbeck, Farrell and Soukup, 1991) O Conversational technologies include a wide range of systems and software like e-mail, instant messaging, web pages, discussion forums, video and audio content/streaming, wikis, and blogs. (Hsu, 2007)
  • 12. Constructivism There are many benefits to the use of conversational technologies or sometimes refereed to as and constructivist tools in education. Constructivism is the dominant theory of the last decade and supports construction of knowledge by the individual. (Karagiorgi, Y., & Symeou, L.,2005)
  • 13. Constructivist learning O Jackie Miers in a report on a Learning Management System for the Technology School of the Future, defines constructivist learning, as cooperative, collaborative, and conversational. O The constructivist theory emphasizes providing learners with opportunities to O interact with each other to clarify and share ideas, O seek assistance O negotiate problems O discuss solutions O integrate new ideas with prior knowledge and O construct their own knowledge that they can transfer to new situations. O These opportunities are available through conversational technologies and also needed for knowledge management.
  • 14. Question: O What is the solution to knowledge management based on the constructivist learning theory? Answer: O The Wiki
  • 15. Wikis O “A wiki is an online information resource that is authored by interested and knowledgeable persons from around the world.” (Hsu, 2007 p.80) O “A wiki provides an extremely fast and efficient way to collaborate and communicate knowledge among virtually anyone interested without the constraints of place or time.”(Reinhart, 2005)
  • 16. What is a Wiki? O Wikis promote collaboration and interactivity. (Hsu, 2007) O The open wiki feature allows for communication, collaboration and the documentation of what is collectively considered pertinent knowledge. (Reinhart, 2005) O Wikis provide a dynamic system for knowledge capture, and are able to evolve with changing needs.
  • 17. Conclusion Conversational technology can be used to manage knowledge, based on the constructivist theory of learning, the wiki is an excellent constructivist tool that is easily integrated as part of an employee’s /learner’s work process to facilitate knowledge sharing and construction. Thank you
  • 18. What is an EPSS? O FuTure reSearch areaS O There are many benefits to the use of O conversational technologies and constructivist O tools for educational use. More research O needs to be done in terms of identifying additional types of applications and O Uses and how to more effectively O identify and apply new approaches to learning O with the aid of these kinds of technologies.(Hsu,2007) O Some of the broader research issues that can
  • 19. Seymour Papert O You can’t teach people everything they need to know… O The best you can do is position them where they can find what they need to know when they need to know it.
  • 20. Key Concerns Related to Knowledge Management O Information O Building large amounts of data into usable form O Avoiding overloading users with unnecessary data O Eliminating wrong/old data O Ensuring customer confidentiality O Keeping the information current O Management O Getting individuals to volunteer knowledge O Bringing together the many people from various disciplines O Determining responsibility for managing the knowledge O Technology O Determining infrastructure requirements O Keeping up with new technologies O Security of data on Internet (Alavi & Leidner, 1999)(p15)
  • 21. O “Hoards of information are of little value: only that information which is actively processed in the mind of an individual through a process of reflection, enlightenment, and learning can be useful.” (Alavi & Leidner, 1999)
