Sustainable Development Goals for Present and Future Generations
1. Sustainable development
Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human
needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the
present, but also for generations to come. Need for Sustainable development. The
present form of development leads to environmental problems which have been
treated as over exploitations of resources and misuse of technology or externalities
The world Commission on environment & development in its report “Our Common
Future” Described sustainable development as ‘development that meets the needs of
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs’.
Key elements of sustainable development :
Involves three conceptual key elements.
I. Integration of Environmental concerns (Include environment issues in business )
• Objective is not a zero growth as that affects economic development
• It focuses on integration of growth & profit
• Sustainability constitutes a firm’s efficient use of natural capital, eco-efficiency,
Formation of environment protection norms.
• Both eco-efficiency and socio-efficiency are concerned primarily with increasing
economic sustainability
• Instrumentalism both natural and social capital aiming to benefit from win-win
situations for included parties

• Conceptualize economic development from the perspective of sustainability is
crucial for environment protection.

III. Equity:
• Development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental policies and
laws to ensure that no group or community is made to bear a disproportionate
share of the harmful effects of pollution or environmental hazards because it
lacks economic or political clout. Also called environmental justice such as waste
treatment facilities, waste dumps, incinerators, landfills, and other industrial and
commercial toxic release sites.

• Social factors include protection of human rights, societal issues,
Accountability & responsibility, Assimilation & dissemination of

• In order to meet the needs of the population in all sections of the
society on sustainable basis all concerned agencies must develop the
policies which will balance the social needs with economic growth as
well as environmental protection.
Economic Dimension:
• Optimum utilization of resources- reduction of cost- Availability of
resources- technology
• Economic issues closely linked with environmental resources.
• Includes economic policies, economic equality, creation of demand,
opportunity for green business, efficient use of renewable resources,
etc
• Balance between environmental & economic sustainability can be
achieved through institutional arrangement that shape & condition
the management & use of natural resources that influences
community awareness.
4. Environmental Dimensions:
• Maintaince of environmental quality through sustainable use of
resources
• All human activities designed & implemented has direct or indirect
influence on environment.
• It right of every living creature to enjoy fresh form, of environmental
resources. Also it has a lasting effect on human living.
• A common approach is must though enforced policies & norms.
• Integration & combined efforts from each country needed for overall
success of environment protection.
• Can be done through world participation, discussion & forums, rules &
norms on environment, responsibility& accountability, Renewal
material, environmental pact.
• Environment issues deeply linked to social factors. Perception &
attitude building is must for growth & survival.
