1. ‘Learning is at once so simple it
seems it should be easily explained
and so complex that it seems to defy
explanation’
2. Learning Theory
• The study of how people learn
• Common learning theories are:
Behaviourism, Cognitivism, Constructivism
& Social Constructivism
3. ID Theory
• Instructional Design Theory is the study of
how to best design instruction so that
learning will take place
• Examples: ADDIE model, Gagne's events of
instruction, Bloom’s taxonomy
4. Making Connections
• One could say that instructional design
theory draws from learning theories.
6. Connectivism
• A learning theory for the digital age
• Connecting specialized nodes or
information sources. Knowledge can be
stored outside of the brain.
• A learner’s network is invaluable
• This theory is promoted by George
Siemens with the University of Manitoba
7. ‘The capacity to know
more is more critical
than what is currently
known. Knowing where
to find information is
more important than
knowing information’
-George Siemens
11. Solutions
• Looking outside of the LMS (learning management system) and
aiding in the development of personal learning networks which
promote full participation. MOOC Event (massive open online
courses)
• Using RRS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to aggregate
course information such as blog entries, headlines, scholarly
journals, audio, & video
• Incorporate social media to assist with connections | example
collaborative tools, readers, twitter & hash tags use
• Demonstrating digital literacy & building authentic networks
\nTime Constraint - 5-7 minutes, assuming zero prior knowledge is the impossible task.\nMy presentation is called ....\nA quote that resonanted with me is .....\nFrom the time we are infacts we start to learn....yet there is so many perspectives and strategies to draw from\n
Behaviourism - training- drill and practise approach, \nCognitivism - knowledge happens in the brain-based, topics being covered, reinforcement, small chunks of information\nConstructivism - the learner actively constructs or builds new ideas and concepts. the individuals prior experiences and perspective is very important\nSocial Constructivism - is similar to Constructivsm but is all about the group and the group experience - moodle’s activities are based on this theory.\n
ADDIE - The five phases—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—represent a dynamic, flexible guideline for building effective training and performance support tools.\n\nGagnes’s Gain attention\nInform learner of objectives\nStimulate recall of prior learning\nPresent stimulus material\nProvide learner guidance\nElicit performance\nProvide feedback\nAssess performance\nEnhance retention transfer\n\nBloom’s Taxonomy\n\nKnowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation\n\n

This brief video visually explains the concept of connectivism.\n
\n
\n
The real value is old way - read Tapscott or another researcher - with connectivism in mind - you could follow Tapscott on Twitter and get real, live & personal perspective about that researcher - which will lead you to more connections\n\nI see a relationship between connectivism - and constructivism - an more active learning.. \n\nRSS (most commonly expanded as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format\n
\n
Provided a context for the main idea of connectivism\nBreak information into smaller more reasonable chunks\nIncluded visuals & media that complement content and address the visual learner - in effort to hold the audiences interest :)\nPost the presentation on slide share to promote openness & connections with others learner in my personal learning network\nAlso made this presentation accessible for the mobile learner.\n\n
