2. Central Idea
People’s actions have an effect on the
world.
Lines of Inquiry
People have a positive influence on the world
around them by reducing pollution.
People have a negative influence on the world
around them by causing pollution.
People working together have the power to
make a change in the world to reduce pollution.
3. Key Concept: Form
What is pollution?
Pollution is wastes and chemicals
that contaminates the water, air,
or soil.
4. Key Concept: Connection
How is pollution harmful?
Pollution is harmful to both people and
animals because of all the wastes and
chemicals. There are different types of
pollution that are harmful.
5. Type of Pollution
Water Pollution
Water gets polluted when oil spills or wastes from
garbage gets in the water. People and animals
need clean drinking water. When water is polluted
of wastes and people and animal drink the polluted
water, it can cause health problems for people and
animals. Some animals can die from drinking
unclean water.
6. Type of Pollution
Littering
Litter is dangerous. It creates garbage. It can cause
people and animals to get sick. Litter can cause animals to
die, especially if they get stuck to something like a soda
holder or if they eat something harmful. It is not good for
animals to get trapped from the things we throw away on
the ground. Litter also destroys parks and beaches.
7. Type of Pollution
Air Pollution
Air pollution happens when things that are not normally there are
added to the air. It can result to poisons in the air. People who
breathe in these poisons are at a higher risk of having asthma and
other damage to their body system. Animals are also affected by the
poisons in the air.
Air pollution is the most harmful pollution in our environment. Air
pollution is cause by the smoke from cars, buses, trucks, trains, and
factories. Even smoke from burning leaves and cigarettes are harmful.
Air pollution can lead to lung cancer, asthma, allergies, and breathing
problems.
8. Facts
The unhealthy things from pollution affect more
than 100 million people in the world. In places
where pollution is very bad, babies are born with
birth defects and people die sooner because of
having cancer and other diseases.
9. Facts
In 2010, Americans make about 250 million tons of
garbage.
Americans generate 30 billion foam cups, 220 million
tires, and 1.8 billion diapers every year.
40% of America’s rivers and 46% of American’s lakes
are too polluted for fishing or swimming.
About 6,400 people die every year in Mexico City and
more than 1 million people suffer from breathing
problems because of air pollution.
10. Key Concept: Reflection
Pollution is very bad for our world. Pollution is a
major problem in our world. Did you know that we
can reduce pollution but we cannot stop it
forever?
What could
we do to help
reduce pollution
then?
11. Facts
Pollution is mostly caused by people because they
drive cars, have smoking factories, and throw
garbage on the ground.
One way to reduce pollution is to carpool so that it
is one less car. Or if we can, during nice weather,
we can walk or ride a bike instead of driving
because it is much healthier for us.
12. Facts
Another way to reduce pollution is to recycle. Things we
recycle we can reuse. That is helpful to our environment.
The most helpful way to reduce pollution is to not litter
and help clean up the earth. So if you see trash on the
ground, pick it up and you will be reducing pollution. You
will do yourself, others, and the animals a great favor!
13. Action
Earth Day was April 22nd
, 2013. Earth Day is a special day
that celebrates the Earth. Earth Day was born on April
22nd
, 1970 in San Francisco, California. Earth Day is a
reminder for us to appreciate nature and find ways to
protect our environment. On Earth Day, our classroom
took a trip around our school community and picked up
trash as a way to reduce pollution. It taught us the
importance of keeping our environment clean. For now on,
we will not litter and will help pick up trash whenever we
see trash.
14. Action
Now it’s your turn! We would like to challenge you
to do the same thing! Take action by going around
your neighborhood to pick up trash! Take action
by not littering and picking up trash when you see
it! Start today! Your actions will help our
environment be a better place to live!
