Grasses
There are 4500 different species of grass. They
can grow well both in hot and cold countries. The
most useful cereals such as corn, wheat, rice and
oats are true grasses. They have been cultivated by
man so they can be used as food.
The tallest grasses can grow as high as 100 feet.
This is the bamboo. It grows in warm countries.
The shortest grasses can be found in the Arctic
Region. These are only one or two inches tall.

Grasses serve as food for cattle, horses and
sheep. One member of the grass family, the sugar
cane, gives us sugar, vinegar and alcohol, while the
bamboo is used for building houses, making
furniture, mats and baskets. The bamboo shoot is
used for food. Other kinds of grasses are used as
decorations.
Grasses help stop soil erosion. Its roots hold
the soil together so that the wind and water will not
wash it away. Indeed, grasses are useful to man.
