Bharat Ratna Maharshi
Dhondo Keshav Karve
Women as a class have different functions to
fulfill in the social economy from those of
men…both national and social economy
require that women should occupy a station
of their own, distinct from that of men.
5/17/2012 Prof. Vasudha Kamat, SNDTWU, India 5
6. Women’s University … Philosophy
“Our aim in establishing Women’s University is
neither to copy the higher institutions for
women in America and Europe nor to rival the
men’s university courses in this country. We
aim to frame our study to suit the mental and
physical conditions of women at present…”
Mr. Naruse, Founder
Japan Women’s University
5/17/2012 Prof. Vasudha Kamat, SNDTWU, India 6
7. Women’s University … Philosophy
“There is a widespread tendency to regard
women merely as a tool or a machine destined
solely for services at home or for propagation
of family line; …we feel the necessity of
educating women as human beings, that we
may be able to call forth their consciousness as
personalities with infinite aspiration and
longings…”
Mr. Naruse, Founder JWU
5/17/2012 Prof. Vasudha Kamat, SNDTWU, India 7
8. Women’s University … Philosophy
“This residential university will focus on
helping women to become innovative leaders in
their fields and promote intercultural
understanding and sustainable development in
Asia and other parts of the world.”
Asian Women’s University, Bangladesh
5/17/2012 Prof. Vasudha Kamat, SNDTWU, India 8
9. Women’s University … Philosophy
We visualise the SNDT Women’s University as a
world class university that continually responds
to the changing social realities through the
development and application of knowledge.
The purpose of such engagement is to create an
inclusive society that promotes and protects
the dignity, equality, social justice and human
rights for all, with special emphasis on
empowerment of women.
SNDTWU Vision Statement

10. Need for Women’s University
Students participate more fully in & out of class.
Students report greater satisfaction than their
co-ed counterparts with their college experience
academically, developmentally and personally.
Students tend to choose traditionally male
disciplines like the sciences.

11. Need for Women’s University
Students develop higher levels of self-esteem than
other achieving women in co-ed institutions.
After two years in co-ed institutions, women
showed to have lower levels of self-esteem than
when they entered college.
Have a higher percentage of majors in economics,
math and life science today than men at
coeducational colleges.
5/17/2012 Prof. Vasudha Kamat, SNDTWU, India 11
12. Need for Women’s University
Nearly half the graduates have earned advanced
degrees and 81% have continued their education
beyond college.
Women's College students are more likely to
graduate.
They are more successful in careers; that is, they
tend to hold higher positions, are happier and earn
more money.
5/17/2012 Prof. Vasudha Kamat, SNDTWU, India 12
13. Lessons from Research
1. Clarify and communicate the mission.
2. Believe students can achieve and hold them
to these expectations.
3. Make students feel like they matter.
4. Provide strong, positive role models to
demonstrate unlimited possibilities.
