Social media and other broader-focused Web activities (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Blogging, LinkedIn) have become *integral* to many in the ECE community. How do you separate your workplace from your personal on-line activities? What are the risks that all social network users face? Is there a positive side to social media? How can you help to protect children and young adults? This session will explore these areas and provide guidelines to follow so you and the children you support can “be safe out there.”

Social Networking experienced the strongest growth in app access, increasing 240 percent in April 2010 over April 2009. Other services that increases in the 100 % range included News, Sports information, Weather, Maps, Online Retail and Photo or Video Sharing Service comScore measures Internet usage through an opt-in panel where heads of households provide permission for the collection of computer information. In May 2010, there were 40.7 million unique Internet users age six and older in Brazil accessing the Internet from a home or work location. The total Brazilian online population, including public computers at Internet cafes, universities, etc. is more than 73 million. Of this home and work audience, 6-14 year olds represented 4.8 million unique visitors, or 11.9 percent of the total. People between the ages of 15-34 accounted for 56.1 percent of the online population, while users age 35 and older made up the remaining 32.1 percent. In terms of content consumption, users age 6-14 consumed fewer than 2 percent of total pages and minutes in May, indicating that this age segment represents lighter Internet users when compared to other demographic segments in the market. Users age 15-24 and 25-34 consumed the largest proportion of pages and minutes, with both segments accounting for more than 30 percent of total pages and minutes during the month and the 15-24 age segment representing the heaviest users92 percent of U.S. children have some type of online presence by the time they are 2 years old. A third of U.S. mothers posted pictures of newborns, and 34 percent of U.S. moms said they had posted sonograms of their as-yet unborn child.

If somebody asks them where they live, their phone number or wants them to send them their photos, or turn on their webcam or meet them… They must always say no and tell you about it. They must never accept messages from unknown senders and even from friends if they have not requested them first. Just opening those messages can trigger viruses that damage computers and try to steal information from them. Don’t insult, disturb or threaten anybody. There is always a way to know who posted a comment or photos on the Internet and they can be identified. These actions constitute a crime and won’t go unpunished even if performed from their computer at home. If someone insults, disturbs or threatens them, they should immediately report it to you so that that person is prevented from doing it again to them or anybody else. If, when searching for something on the Internet they come across inappropriate content they should let you know. They should not be ashamed or scared as it can happen to anybody. They should not believe that everything they see on the Internet or -on TV- is true.

- 2) Used console sales. When people do naughty things with their games consoles, Microsoft hits them with the banhammer. Their expensive console is no longer able to play online, and is about as much use as a toaster. A lot of the various types of cheating means the scammer has to change parts inside the console, which of course breaks the warranty sticker in half.What do they do? They jump onto EBay, and buy a bunch of warranty stickers “for their collection”.
