Ahmedabad on the bank of river Vatrak
§ Kheda district borders with Sabarkantha district in the
north, Panchmahals district in the east, Vadodara district
in the south, and Ahmedabad district in the west
§ The district has 13 talukas with Nadiad (district
headquarter), Mahemdabad, Kapadwanj, Matar, and
Kheda being the developed talukas
§ Famous pilgrimage destinations in the district are Dakor
temple, Santram temple, and Mahadev temple
§ The thermal power station at Wanakbori in Kheda with
a total installed capacity of 1,470 MW is the largest
coal-based thermal power station in the State

Economy and Industry Profile
§ Kheda district is also known by the name golden leaf since it is the major producer of tobacco in the
State. Additionally the district has a strong base of cotton cultivation specifically in Nadiad taluka.
§ Nadiad taluka is the industrial center in the district, with major concentration of industries in sectors
like Textiles, Paper, Electrical equipments and Food processing
§ One of the largest manufacturer of corrugated boxes in the Country, the Core Emballage Ltd., is
present in the district
§ The upcoming industrial sectors in the district include Ceramics, Plastic and its products, Cement and
Gypsum
§ There are huge natural gas reserves in Matar taluka of the district. Oil and gas company Shell India
Ltd. has its bottling plant and filling facilities in the district
§ One of the oldest textile industries - New Shorock Mills (Division of Mafatlal Industries) has its
operations at Nadiad

§ In the year 2006-07, Kheda produced 1.07 lakh metric
tonnes (MT) of fruits, 4.13 lakh MT of Vegetables, and
8,990 MT of spices
§ Main fruits cultivated in the district include Aonla,
Citrus, Banana and Papaya. Kheda is the largest
producer of Aonla contributing 23% to the total
production in the state
§ Kheda contributes 7% to the total production of
vegetables in Gujarat. The significant crops of
vegetables in the district include potatoes, tomatoes,
brinjals and onions
§ Major Spices grown in the district include cumin seeds,
fennel seeds, chilly, ginger and turmeric
§ The district is the second largest producer of
Tobacco in the State

§ Major minerals found in the district are bauxite, limestone
and quartz. Other minerals found in the district include
bentonite, brick sand, road metal, sand, gravel and black trap
§ Limestone occurs in Balasinor taluka of Kheda with 800
Million tonnes of reserves, processing having 7% share in
total reserves of the State
§ Bauxite reserves are found in Thasara and Kapadwanj
talukas (approx. 89 Million tonnes) and quartz reserves exist
in Balasinor and Thasar talukas of the district
§ Some of the mineral-based industries in Kheda are:

§ Presently there are 20 medium and large scale industries in Kheda district
§ All these industrial units are concentrated in Nadiad, Mahemdabad, Kheda and Matar talukas of the
district with an investments aggregating to INR 62,776.32 lakh (USD 149 million), generating 6,720 jobs

Small Scale Industries (SSI)

§ There are 8,186 small scale industries operating in Kheda district. Some of the main industries under
SSI are chemicals, miscellaneous manufacturing industries, repairing services, food products and non-
metallic mineral products
§ Maximum number of SSI units (2,521 Units) are related to Repairing services followed by textile
industry with 1,086 units
§ Most of the small scale industries are concentrated in Nadiad, Kapadwanj, Thasara and Mahemdabad

1988-1997 vs 1998-2007 – Comparative Data
§ As per the Industrial Entrepreneur Memoranda
(IEMs) filed, sectors showing growth in
investments during 1998-2007 over previous
decade are ceramics, plastic and its products,
cement & gypsum and miscellaneous machinery
§ These sectors account for investments equivalent to
INR 23 crore (USD 5 million) during 1988-1997
§ However, during the decade of 1998-2007, growth in
these sectors were tremendous with an investment of
INR 270 crore (USD 64 million)
§ Maximum investments were witnessed in Cement
and Gypsum sector followed by Paper and its
products during the decade(1998 – 2007)

§ During 1988-97, paper and pulp sector attracted
highest investment to the tune of INR 1,372
crore (USD 3.26 billion) contributing 59% of the
total investments in the district
§ Highest employment was generated by textile
sector with creation of 6,002 jobs during 1988-97
and an investment of INR 186 crore (USD 44.28
million)
§ Paper and Pulp sector generated the next highest
employment opportunity creating 2,974 jobs
followed by electrical equipments creating 1,748
jobs

§ Cement and Gypsum emerged as the new
sector attracting highest investment of INR 208
crore (USD 49.50 million) contributing 47% to the
total investments
§ Food processing industries attracted next
highest investment of INR 86 crore (USD 20
million) creating as many as 301 jobs
§ Plastic and its products grew tremendously
attracting investment of INR 44 crore (USD 10.47
million) with 50% increase in total number of units
and generating highest employment with 528
jobs
§ An upward trend in investments was observed in
Ceramics sector with growth of over 150 %

Investments in Pipeline
§ 4 MoUs amounting to INR 252 crore (USD 60 million) of
investments were signed in Kheda during Vibrant Gujarat :
Global Investors’ Summit (VGGIS) hosted in the years
2003, 2005 and 2007
§ Engineering & Automobiles, Pharmaceuticals and
Chemicals sectors invited investments
§ Chemical sector received highest proposed investment
for INR 100 crore (USD 24 million) with the plan to set up
a calcium manufacturing unit in the district
§ The next highest investment was proposed by the
pharmaceutical sector with an investment of INR 72 crore
(USD 18 million)
§ Engineering & automobile sector received investments
from Torrent Cable Ltd. and C M Smith & Sons Ltd. with an
aggregate of INR 80 crore (USD 20 million)

§ The proposal for setting up an integrated textile park in Kheda is expected to fuel the industrial
and economic growth of the district with increase in employment opportunities and investments in
the textile sector
§ The completion of Ahmedabad-Nadiad Expressway and Nadiad-Vadodara Expressway, two
– lane dual carriageway with full access control has enabled to save time in commuting between
these districts and increase the commercial value of the region because of better accessibility
§ The emerging industrial sectors such as Paper, Cement & Gypsum and Ceramics showed
an upward trend in investments in the last two decades. This would further boost the industrial
growth and economy of the district
§ Kheda has some of the best mineral based industries which offer scope for investments in the
mining sector

§ Gujarat Electricity Board located at Nadiad is the supplier of power to the district
§ Kheda district has the largest thermal power station in the State of 1,470 MW located at Wanakbori in

§ There are also well-developed substations spread across the district – 1 substation of 220 K.V. at
Kapadwanj, 2 substations of 132 K.V. at Mahemdabad & Nadiad, and 19 substations of 66 K.V.

Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from three main sources, viz Gujarat
Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), irrigation canal, and sardar sarovar project.

Proposed Infrastructure Projects
§ Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) has identified
Navagam village in Kheda district to be developed as a rural tourist
hub. This will promote village tourism in the State and also benefit
local communities economically, socially, and culturally. Various
activities such as like landscaping and development of parks at
Navagam would be taken up
§ Gujarat State Road Development Corporation Ltd. has envisaged
construction of road-over-bridge in lieu of existing level crossing No.
276/C in km 1/8 in km 2/0 of Nadiad bypass (link joining Dabhan-Nadiad
and Nadiad-Ahmedabad road)
§ A MoU is signed between the District Rural Development Agency;
Nadiad; Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union; Anand; and
Commissioner of Rural Development, Government of Gujarat in respect
of special project for ‘Improving socio-economic conditions of BPL
families of Kheda district through Dairying and Animal Husbandry

Table 6 : Educational Institutions in Kheda
§ Nadiad taluka of the district hosts one of the famous
Engineering institute ‘Dharamsinh Desai Institute of
Technology’ which offers courses in civil, mechanical,
electrical, chemicals, instrumentation & control, computer
and electronics and communication engineering as well as
management and pharmacy courses. There is one more
engineering college – Charotar Institute of Technology at
Changa offering similar courses
§ There are two nursing colleges, one dental college, and
one ayurvedic college present in the district
§ Industrial Training Institutes in Kheda impart training in
areas such as dress making, Welding, electronic system
maintenance, plastic processing, computer operating and
several others
§ There is regional Sugarcane Research Station of
Gujarat Agricultural university located in Thasara taluka
of the district

§ There are 8 community healthcare centers, 46 primary healthcare
centers, and 207 sub centers in Kheda district
§ Two civil hospitals in the district are located at Kheda and
Nadiad
§ A multi-specialty hospital, - Muljibhai Patel Urological
Hospital (MPUH), is located in Nadiad taluka of the district, which
is one of its kind in Asia as it’s the first hospital in the country
devoted entirely to Nephrology and Urology.
§ D.D.M.M. Institute of Cardiac Surgery and an Ayurvedic
Hospital at J.S. Patel Ayurvedic College are also located in the
district

§ Dakor – Dakor is the most famous religious place of Lord Ranchhodraiji
in Gujarat. It is located at a distance of 33 km from Nadiad taluka and
attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. It has eight domes and twenty
four turrets covered with gold leaves
§ Dinosaur and Fossil Park – Raioli in Kheda district is a treasure of
fossils and fossilised eggs of a 10 meter long dinosaur. These fossils
are about 65 million year old. The park has some basic plaster models
and information about the dinosaur
§ Santaram Temple – It is a popular pilgrimage site in Gujarat dedicated
to Saint Santaram Maharaj who is believed to be the incarnation of
Hindu trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, depicted with three
heads and six hands
§ Water Structures – Kapadwanj taluka has two sub-terranean water
structures – a Kund and the Battris Kotha ni Vav. The Kund is a large
square tank with steps on all four sides leading to the water. The Vav
descends five stories. The columns that support the pavilion roofs have
beautiful carvings

  • 7. 7 Economy and Industry Profile § Kheda district is also known by the name golden leaf since it is the major producer of tobacco in the State. Additionally the district has a strong base of cotton cultivation specifically in Nadiad taluka. § Nadiad taluka is the industrial center in the district, with major concentration of industries in sectors like Textiles, Paper, Electrical equipments and Food processing § One of the largest manufacturer of corrugated boxes in the Country, the Core Emballage Ltd., is present in the district § The upcoming industrial sectors in the district include Ceramics, Plastic and its products, Cement and Gypsum § There are huge natural gas reserves in Matar taluka of the district. Kheda is the largest producer of Aonla contributing 23% to the total production in the state § Kheda contributes 7% to the total production of vegetables in Gujarat. Other minerals found in the district include bentonite, brick sand, road metal, sand, gravel and black trap § Limestone occurs in Balasinor taluka of Kheda with 800 Million tonnes of reserves, processing having 7% share in total reserves of the State § Bauxite reserves are found in Thasara and Kapadwanj talukas (approx. 89 Million tonnes) and quartz reserves exist in Balasinor and Thasar talukas of the district § Some of the mineral-based industries in Kheda are: §Bauxite calcination plant §Bentonite pulverizing unit §Cement plant §Crockery/ceramic unit §Glazed tiles §Marble cutting and polishing §Quartz crushing unit Bauxite Limestone Bentonite Sand Quartz Black trap Map 2: Mineral Reserves in Kheda

  • 17. 17 Economy Drivers § The proposal for setting up an integrated textile park in Kheda is expected to fuel the industrial and economic growth of the district with increase in employment opportunities and investments in the textile sector § The completion of Ahmedabad-Nadiad Expressway and Nadiad-Vadodara Expressway, two – lane dual carriageway with full access control has enabled to save time in commuting between these districts and increase the commercial value of the region because of better accessibility § The emerging industrial sectors such as Paper, Cement & Gypsum and Ceramics showed an upward trend in investments in the last two decades. This would further boost the industrial growth and economy of the district § Kheda has some of the best mineral based industries which offer scope for investments in the mining sector

This will promote village tourism in the State and also benefit local communities economically, socially, and culturally.   • 33. 33 Tourism Source: India Guide Gujarat, 2007, Annual Report (2006-07) § Dakor – Dakor is the most famous religious place of Lord Ranchhodraiji in Gujarat. It is located at a distance of 33 km from Nadiad taluka and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. It has eight domes and twenty four turrets covered with gold leaves § Dinosaur and Fossil Park – Raioli in Kheda district is a treasure of fossils and fossilised eggs of a 10 meter long dinosaur. These fossils are about 65 million year old. The park has some basic plaster models and information about the dinosaur § Santaram Temple – It is a popular pilgrimage site in Gujarat dedicated to Saint Santaram Maharaj who is believed to be the incarnation of Hindu trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, depicted with three heads and six hands § Water Structures – Kapadwanj taluka has two sub-terranean water structures – a Kund and the Battris Kotha ni Vav.
