INSTRUCTION
(C.A.I.)
Use of computers in education is
referred by many names such as:

Computer Assisted Instruction(C.A.I.)
Computer Assisted Learning(C.A.L.)
Computer Based Education(C.B.E.)
Computer Based Instruction(C.B.I.)
Computer Enriched Instruction
(C.E.I.)
Computer Managed Instruction
(C.M.I.)
NEW TERMINOLOGY:
Web Based Training
Web Based Learning
Web Based Instruction
Technologies of instruction
1. Hardware
2. Software
  I. system software
  II. Application software
3.courseware
Types of C.A.I.

Drill and practice
Tutorial
Educational games
Simulation
Problem solving
Informatinal instruction
Tutorial
Practical work-oriented
     instruction
Typical C.A.I. provides:
Text or multimedia content

Multiple choice questions

Problems

Immediate feedback

Notes on incorrect responses

Summarizes students performance

Exercises for practice

Worksheets and test
Characteristics of
Computer Assisted
Instruction
Two way interaction

Stored instructional program

Student’s responses

Individualized instruction

Problem solving

Drill & Practice
BASIC ASSUMPTIONS:

Instruction for a number of learners at a time

Automatic recording of the learner’s performance

Variety in the use of methods and techniques

Coping with quality

Taking over time consuming tables
Advantages of C.A.I:
One to one interaction

Great motivator

Freedom to experiment with different options

Self pacing-allow student to proceed at their own pace

Helps teacher-can devote more time to individual student

Individual attention

Privacy helps the shy and slow learners to learn

Learn more and more rapidly

Self directed learning
Drawbacks
They are generally costly

Decreases the amount of human interaction

Availability and development of software or computer
programmes

Instructions tend to be boring and repetitive

Teacher could provide the courseware exactly but this is
expensive, time consuming and may require more
programming expertise

Lack of infrastructure

They consume a lot of power

Over use of multimedia may divert the attention from the
main content.
Problems of maintenance

Non human quality

Absence of emotional climate

Non achievement of affective objectives

No solution of problems like
discipline,wastage of time
