A natural disaster

3. Hurricanes are born over tropical oceans,
usually during late summer and early
autumn. They need two things to get them
started: heat and moist air.
4. Hurricanes can cause a lot of
damage. They bring along
strong winds and heavy
rainfall. In 2005, Hurricane
Katrina hit the Gulf Coast
and destroyed New
Orleans. Many people died
and hundreds of
thousands had to leave the
city.
5. A hurricane’s high winds are also destructive and
may spawn tornadoes. Torrential rains cause
further damage by spawning floods and
landslides, which may occur many miles inland.
The best defense against a hurricane is an
accurate forecast that gives people time to get
out of its way. The National Hurricane Center
issues hurricane watches for storms that may
endanger communities, and hurricane warnings
for storms that will make landfall within 24
hours.
