From the School Nurses

Reminder to parents:
If your child has been diagnosed, by a doctor, with a contagious illness please inform the school
clinic. The school nurses will then be able to notify parents of children with whom your child has
come into contact with, so that parents may observe their child for similar symptoms

Sore throats
A sore throat can be the result of an infection by a virus or
bacteria. It may occur as a single symptom, or be one of a
number of symptoms relating to a wider illness, such as flu.
Signs of a sore throat:
• Pain in the throat and difficulty in swallowing.
• Pain may spread to the ears.
• The throat is red and the tonsils are swollen and may be
       coated.
• Possibly a high temperature.
• Swollen lymph nodes under the jaw and in the neck may occur.
Treatment:
• Allow your child to rest.
• Warm drinks and soft food may ease swallowing problems.
• Drink plenty of fluids (no sodas).
• Give Calpol (paracetamol) 4 to 6 hourly OR Nurofen (ibuprofen) 6 to 8 hourly for pain and / or
      fever.
• Use salt water gargles, or over-the-counter preparations from a pharmacy, such as sprays
containing antiseptics and anaesthetics to numb the sore area, or antiseptic gargles.
Advice:
• Viral infections of the throat usually improve in two to three days without treatment.
• If signs of a sore throat persist for more than a few days or are severe with marked difficulty in
swallowing, high fever, a rash or vomiting, then your doctor should be consulted.
• Antibiotics may need to be prescribed by the doctor. Your child will no longer be contagious
after being on an antibiotic for twenty four hours.
• It is important to take a complete course of antibiotics, even if your child is feeling better.

For more information on sore throats check out the website:
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Sore-throat/Pages/Introduction.aspx

There is good advice regarding the usage of antibiotics on the Health Authority Abu Dhabi website:

Foundation Stage 1 (FS1)

FS1 have had an exciting week learning all about Amazing Aeroplanes! In Green class, Joseph
brought in his aeroplanes from home and told us all about all the different parts. We talked about
where we have been on an aeroplane and we pretended to be cabin crew! We sorted lost luggage
and made boarding passes for our friends and we practiced writing numbers and letters when we
made Arrival and Departure boards. We looked at pictures of Abu Dhabi taken from the sky and we
could recognise many by noticing features of the buildings!

Well done to our Stars of the Week!

Luca Aveta – White class
Cambell Sellar- Yellow Class
Aditya Raj Duggal- Blue Class
Zayed Al Hammadi- Red Class
Zeina Badawy- Green Class

Foundation Stage 2 (FS2)

‘The wheels on the Abu Dhabi Tour Bus go round and round....all day long.’ FS2 found this out when
we started off our week with an exciting visit from the Abu Dhabi Big Bus Company. Each class had a
turn to explore the bus and go on a tour of Khalifa city. The children loved spotting familiar
landmarks from the top deck. The visit from the tour bus helped us to write some fantastic stories
about going on a journey and we have also designed some new tour maps for the company.
What is your favourite 3D shape to eat? In Jade Class we found out that spheres were the tastiest.
We also quite liked cones, however cylinders were the least favourite!
FS2 have loved learning all about 3D shapes this week and we have been trying hard to remember
all of their names and properties. Tasting food that was actually the same as a 3D shape helped us
to do this!

Congratulations to last week’s stars of the week!

Year 1

WOW! What a week we have had in Year 1. In literacy we have continued to look at a variety of
poems, we even had a go at writing our own acrostic poems. We have used rhyming words and
followed the structure provided to share our own ideas. Our toys topic is now well under way with the
children learning about toys from other countries and toys from the past. We have looked at toys that
used to be played in the UAE during our Social Studies this week, and had a go at playing them
ourselves. In science we have been thinking about how toys move and what forces we use to make
the movement along with how to make them stop again!
The Year 1 teachers would like to remind parents that the deadline for returning consent forms and
contributions for our visits to the Build-a-Bear factory in Dubai later in June is SUNDAY 3rd JUNE 2012.
We have to confirm transport for the visits. Please make sure you have returned the required
documents by the above date. We are still looking for parent helpers for some of the visits, if you are
able to help us please indicate this on your reply slip. Thank you.

Year 1 Sparrows class will be saying goodbye to one of their class members this
week. Alexa will be heading off to live in New York next week. Alexa has been a
cheerful class member always making us smile and laugh. We will miss you in
Sparrows class but we would like to wish you good luck for the future, we hope
you will keep in touch.

Our superstar learners in Year 1
this week are: Wilma Sundt in Robins, Alex Vliegen in
Sparrows, Breeana Duruba in Doves, Jad Haddad in
Larks and Zoya Sameer in Cuckoos. Well done.

Year 2

Let us begin by saying a big thank you and well done to all the children
for making our Princes and Princesses day last week so memorable! We
enjoyed sharing our wonderful castles with the other children in the
school, and sharing our magical kingdoms and puppet shows to our
friends in the classroom. The highlight of the day was when all the noble
knights, princes, princesses and fairytale characters gathered for a
mighty feast! Well done and many thanks for all parental support!

This week we have learning about our new topic: The World Around Us. The children have been
learning where different foods come from, while also looking at different countries and continents
around the world. Throughout the topic each class will be focusing on a particular country ready for
our end of year production which will be shown in the Year 2 classrooms and shared area on Tuesday
26th June.
The children have been solving some tricky 2 step real life problems in class for maths. In science we
have been continuing with our Electricity unit of work and the children have enjoyed making their
own circuits!

Well done to last week’s Stars of the Week!
Flamingos- Neil Galea
Herons- Anya Jansen van Vuuren
Sandpipers- Matthew Hile
Storks- Mackenzie Kenyon
Spoonbills- Ryana Hanafieh

Year 3

This week we have been having a ‘blast’ in Year 3. The
children have been launching their rockets high into the
Earth’s atmosphere using a bicycle pump and our own
                                          special rocket launcher!

In Literacy we have been working primarily on Speaking
and Listening, taking part in Hot Seating to get to know
character’s thoughts and feelings and putting on a sketch
of the well-known fairytale Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

In Maths the children have been learning
coordinates and angles. We have had a lot of fun
mapping out coordinates and giving our partners
directions. Why don’t you have a practice at home
by giving your child directions to find some ‘hidden
treasure’?
This week’s science has had us investigating the
effect light/the sun has on shadows and how
different materials cast different shadows.

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week – McKenzie
Venus, Fred Atkins, Taylor Pharoah, Niamh Hickey and
                                          Fatma Al Mazrouei.

                                              Year 3 Notices:
We have begun our new topic, All the Worlds a Stage.
During this topic, the children will be building a stage with
a MOVING PART. Please can you discuss this with your
child so they can begin to gather ideas on how it would
work, such as, a turn table, moving curtains, moving
                                              scenes etc.
Year 4

Wow, how fast are these weeks going? Well done to
                                            another amazing week Year 4.
The teachers have been so impressed with how much
extra work you are putting into the Rainforest topic! So
many children are completing additional PowerPoint
presentations and quizzes at home, well done! The
teachers and Classroom Assistants are really enjoying the
                                            challenge of the quizzes!
The children have been really inspired by how animals use
camouflage in the Rainforest to create some fabulous art
work. We are running out of wall space to display all of
                                            them!

In Literacy we are beginning to studying adverts so please bring in an advert from a magazine or
newspaper.

Stars of the Week!
Well done to our new Stars of the Week! You amazed your
teachers with your outstanding effort and behavior.
Miss Gaywood (on behalf of Sand Grouse!) Sacha Pujol

Big big big congratulations to Super Sandgrouse who won
the first ever class award from the Classroom Assistants!
Sandgrouse always have super behavior around the
school, fabulous manners and shirts tucked in! Which class
will win next week????

Year 5

Year 5 have nearly finished their topic on Native Americans and we have had some fantastic posters
and information displays about all the different tribes. It is wonderful to see such a high standard of
work from the children. In school, we have also been looking at creating adverts and using
persuasive elements to make our adverts stand out. The children have created some interesting
adverts for drinks, thinking carefully about their audience and who they are targeting the drink at. This
will build into our new topic next term all about the
Olympics.

Congratulations again to our Stars of the Week!!
Year 6

This week in Year 6 the children have been slogging through their SATs.
However all of the pupils have risen to the challenge and they have tackled
each test with their usual effervescent aplomb. The staff of Year 6 would like to
say just how proud we are of each one of the children, who have come into
school with their usual hard working and happy attitude, all of this despite the
stresses of the SATs.

The teachers are already busy marking and checking the papers, because as
from next week our attentions turn to our production Petra Pen – The Girl Who Couldn’t Grow Up.
We would like to remind parents of the Year 6 Pool Party on the 14th June. This celebration of the
children’s hard work and forth-coming graduation into Year 7 is being organized by the parent reps,
who have asked for a donation of 30AED to cover the cost of refreshments. We ask that this money is
brought into school as soon as possible in order for the reps to calculate the numbers.

Well done to Last Week’s Award Winners (The Final Week of the Weekly Awards)

Newsletter 31 May 2012

  • 1. Al Yasmina School Primary Newsletter 31st May 2012 Issue 34 - 2011/12 Dear Parents, Al Yasmina School Summer Music Concert Al Yasmina School will be presenting its summer music concert on Monday 25th June, at 6pm. The concert will feature performances from the Senior Orchestra, Al Yasmina Singers, the Senior, Junior and Intermediate Choirs, the Junior String Orchestra, Senior and Junior Brass Ensembles, the Senior and Junior Flute Choirs and solo pianists. This will be a very special celebration of another year’s hugely successful music-making at Al Yasmina School – so please come along and support our hard-working and talented musicians!! SAVE THE DATE!! From the School Nurses Reminder to parents: If your child has been diagnosed, by a doctor, with a contagious illness please inform the school clinic. The school nurses will then be able to notify parents of children with whom your child has come into contact with, so that parents may observe their child for similar symptoms Sore throats A sore throat can be the result of an infection by a virus or bacteria. It may occur as a single symptom, or be one of a number of symptoms relating to a wider illness, such as flu. Signs of a sore throat: • Pain in the throat and difficulty in swallowing. • Pain may spread to the ears. • The throat is red and the tonsils are swollen and may be coated. • Possibly a high temperature. • Swollen lymph nodes under the jaw and in the neck may occur.
  • 2. Treatment: • Allow your child to rest. • Warm drinks and soft food may ease swallowing problems. • Drink plenty of fluids (no sodas). • Give Calpol (paracetamol) 4 to 6 hourly OR Nurofen (ibuprofen) 6 to 8 hourly for pain and / or fever. • Use salt water gargles, or over-the-counter preparations from a pharmacy, such as sprays containing antiseptics and anaesthetics to numb the sore area, or antiseptic gargles. Advice: • Viral infections of the throat usually improve in two to three days without treatment. • If signs of a sore throat persist for more than a few days or are severe with marked difficulty in swallowing, high fever, a rash or vomiting, then your doctor should be consulted. • Antibiotics may need to be prescribed by the doctor. Your child will no longer be contagious after being on an antibiotic for twenty four hours. • It is important to take a complete course of antibiotics, even if your child is feeling better. For more information on sore throats check out the website: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Sore-throat/Pages/Introduction.aspx There is good advice regarding the usage of antibiotics on the Health Authority Abu Dhabi website: http://www.haad.ae/HAAD/Portals/0/Health%20Authority%20Parents%20Guide%20Eng.indd.pdf Message from Friends of Al Yasmina (FOY) FOYveg Orders are now being taken for June. • 3. Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) FS1 have had an exciting week learning all about Amazing Aeroplanes! In Green class, Joseph brought in his aeroplanes from home and told us all about all the different parts. We talked about where we have been on an aeroplane and we pretended to be cabin crew! We sorted lost luggage and made boarding passes for our friends and we practiced writing numbers and letters when we made Arrival and Departure boards. We looked at pictures of Abu Dhabi taken from the sky and we could recognise many by noticing features of the buildings! Well done to our Stars of the Week! Luca Aveta – White class Cambell Sellar- Yellow Class Aditya Raj Duggal- Blue Class Zayed Al Hammadi- Red Class Zeina Badawy- Green Class Foundation Stage 2 (FS2) ‘The wheels on the Abu Dhabi Tour Bus go round and round....all day long.’ FS2 found this out when we started off our week with an exciting visit from the Abu Dhabi Big Bus Company. Each class had a turn to explore the bus and go on a tour of Khalifa city. The children loved spotting familiar landmarks from the top deck. The visit from the tour bus helped us to write some fantastic stories about going on a journey and we have also designed some new tour maps for the company.
  • 4. What is your favourite 3D shape to eat? In Jade Class we found out that spheres were the tastiest. We also quite liked cones, however cylinders were the least favourite! FS2 have loved learning all about 3D shapes this week and we have been trying hard to remember all of their names and properties. Tasting food that was actually the same as a 3D shape helped us to do this! Congratulations to last week’s stars of the week! Year 1 WOW! What a week we have had in Year 1. In literacy we have continued to look at a variety of poems, we even had a go at writing our own acrostic poems. We have used rhyming words and followed the structure provided to share our own ideas. Our toys topic is now well under way with the children learning about toys from other countries and toys from the past. We have looked at toys that used to be played in the UAE during our Social Studies this week, and had a go at playing them ourselves. In science we have been thinking about how toys move and what forces we use to make the movement along with how to make them stop again!
  • 5. The Year 1 teachers would like to remind parents that the deadline for returning consent forms and contributions for our visits to the Build-a-Bear factory in Dubai later in June is SUNDAY 3rd JUNE 2012. We have to confirm transport for the visits. Please make sure you have returned the required documents by the above date. We are still looking for parent helpers for some of the visits, if you are able to help us please indicate this on your reply slip. Thank you. Year 1 Sparrows class will be saying goodbye to one of their class members this week. Alexa will be heading off to live in New York next week. Alexa has been a cheerful class member always making us smile and laugh. We will miss you in Sparrows class but we would like to wish you good luck for the future, we hope you will keep in touch. Our superstar learners in Year 1 this week are: Wilma Sundt in Robins, Alex Vliegen in Sparrows, Breeana Duruba in Doves, Jad Haddad in Larks and Zoya Sameer in Cuckoos. Well done. Year 2 Let us begin by saying a big thank you and well done to all the children for making our Princes and Princesses day last week so memorable! We enjoyed sharing our wonderful castles with the other children in the school, and sharing our magical kingdoms and puppet shows to our friends in the classroom. The highlight of the day was when all the noble knights, princes, princesses and fairytale characters gathered for a mighty feast! Well done and many thanks for all parental support! This week we have learning about our new topic: The World Around Us. The children have been learning where different foods come from, while also looking at different countries and continents around the world. Throughout the topic each class will be focusing on a particular country ready for our end of year production which will be shown in the Year 2 classrooms and shared area on Tuesday 26th June.
  • 6. The children have been solving some tricky 2 step real life problems in class for maths. In science we have been continuing with our Electricity unit of work and the children have enjoyed making their own circuits! Well done to last week’s Stars of the Week! Flamingos- Neil Galea Herons- Anya Jansen van Vuuren Sandpipers- Matthew Hile Storks- Mackenzie Kenyon Spoonbills- Ryana Hanafieh Year 3 This week we have been having a ‘blast’ in Year 3. The children have been launching their rockets high into the Earth’s atmosphere using a bicycle pump and our own special rocket launcher! In Literacy we have been working primarily on Speaking and Listening, taking part in Hot Seating to get to know character’s thoughts and feelings and putting on a sketch of the well-known fairytale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In Maths the children have been learning coordinates and angles. We have had a lot of fun mapping out coordinates and giving our partners directions. Why don’t you have a practice at home by giving your child directions to find some ‘hidden treasure’? This week’s science has had us investigating the effect light/the sun has on shadows and how different materials cast different shadows. Congratulations to our Stars of the Week – McKenzie Venus, Fred Atkins, Taylor Pharoah, Niamh Hickey and Fatma Al Mazrouei. Year 3 Notices: We have begun our new topic, All the Worlds a Stage. During this topic, the children will be building a stage with a MOVING PART. Please can you discuss this with your child so they can begin to gather ideas on how it would work, such as, a turn table, moving curtains, moving scenes etc.
  • 7. Year 4 Wow, how fast are these weeks going? Well done to another amazing week Year 4. The teachers have been so impressed with how much extra work you are putting into the Rainforest topic! So many children are completing additional PowerPoint presentations and quizzes at home, well done! The teachers and Classroom Assistants are really enjoying the challenge of the quizzes! The children have been really inspired by how animals use camouflage in the Rainforest to create some fabulous art work. We are running out of wall space to display all of them! In Literacy we are beginning to studying adverts so please bring in an advert from a magazine or newspaper. Stars of the Week! Well done to our new Stars of the Week! You amazed your teachers with your outstanding effort and behavior. Miss Gaywood (on behalf of Sand Grouse!) Sacha Pujol Warblers, Halle Evans Pipits, James Raisbeck Sand Grouse, Obad Al Jaberi Wheatears and Haziq Mohamed Rasidin Wagtails. Big big big congratulations to Super Sandgrouse who won the first ever class award from the Classroom Assistants! Sandgrouse always have super behavior around the school, fabulous manners and shirts tucked in! Which class will win next week???? Year 5 Year 5 have nearly finished their topic on Native Americans and we have had some fantastic posters and information displays about all the different tribes. It is wonderful to see such a high standard of work from the children. In school, we have also been looking at creating adverts and using persuasive elements to make our adverts stand out. The children have created some interesting adverts for drinks, thinking carefully about their audience and who they are targeting the drink at. This will build into our new topic next term all about the Olympics. Congratulations again to our Stars of the Week!!
  • 8. Year 6 This week in Year 6 the children have been slogging through their SATs. However all of the pupils have risen to the challenge and they have tackled each test with their usual effervescent aplomb. The staff of Year 6 would like to say just how proud we are of each one of the children, who have come into school with their usual hard working and happy attitude, all of this despite the stresses of the SATs. The teachers are already busy marking and checking the papers, because as from next week our attentions turn to our production Petra Pen – The Girl Who Couldn’t Grow Up. We would like to remind parents of the Year 6 Pool Party on the 14th June. This celebration of the children’s hard work and forth-coming graduation into Year 7 is being organized by the parent reps, who have asked for a donation of 30AED to cover the cost of refreshments. We ask that this money is brought into school as soon as possible in order for the reps to calculate the numbers. All the children will need to bring is their swimming costumes, some Caribbean themed clothes to change into, a water bottle and their best limbo moves! We would be delighted to receive any help from parents (please see invites). Please check schoolbags for invites/return slips and send monies in a named envelope to class teacher by Sun 3rd June. We look forward to seeing you and the children there.
