Causes of a Yeast Infection in Women
1. A yeast infection is a severely uncomfortable situation
where there is unpleasant itching, irritation and redness in
the area. These are just a few symptoms that can be
associated with a yeast infection. The unbearable itching
caused is one of the reasons why people are looking for a
quick, effective, long term solution. To treat the problem,
people will try almost anything from home made
remedies to commercially available medicines. But why
does a yeast infection attack mostly women?
2. Candida albicans is a microorganism that is always present
in damp areas in our body. When everything is in normal
balance, Candida does not cause any harm. Our body is
usually able to maintain an adequate balance between
good and bad bacteria. However when this balance is
destroyed, it can leave the organism Candida free to grow
and populate. This overgrowth of microorganisms is what
results in irritation, redness, and itchiness.
3. Men can potentially be affected by a yeast infection, but it
is more common to occur in women. There are several
physiological factors women possess that increase their
risks. Many women already have the microorganisms that
caused the infection. However due to the presence of
other bacteria, the amount of Candida in specific areas
remains tolerable to the body. It is the disruption of this
balance of microorganisms that cause the excessive
growth of the Candida which is followed by an infection of
the affected area.
4. As the population of Candida grows, it increases the size of
the infected areas. Stopping the various symptoms
associated with yeast infection means addressing each
symptom, factor, and situation one by one. One cause of
the excessive growth of the yeast in that area can be
associated with consuming antibiotics. Antibiotics disrupt
the presence of other microorganisms that control the
population of Candida. This is why yogurt is usually
recommended for people with a yeast infection. The
microorganisms present in the yogurt are what help to
restore the balance between microorganisms and
Candida.
5. Women also have a greater risk of having a yeast infection
due to their estrogen levels. This is the reason why women
who take estrogen-containing birth control pills and those
who are pregnant are more prone to an infection. Women
at this stage have a very erratic hormonal balance that
affects the population of Candida. Also, using an
intrauterine device (IUD) as a contraceptive method has
also been shown to increase risk of an infection in some
women.
6. There are several other possible causes of a yeast infection
including some detergents and fabric softeners. Aging may
also contribute to the growth of the bacteria especially if
one is already undergoing menopause. During
menopause, the estrogen levels drop which results in
thinning of the vaginal wall. This makes it more
susceptible to different kinds of organisms that could lead
to various infections, which can include a yeast infection.
7. It can be an embarrassing condition and be unpleasant to
deal with for the unfortunate individual. One main
concern is that once you have had an infection, there a
strong chance that it may re-occur. So most people who
have the condition will be seeking a permanent solution.
8. Yeast infection attacks mostly women due to the
conditions mentioned above. Having knowledge of these
conditions and situations may help prevent the infection
developing or spreading.
