2. IMPRESSIONIST ERA IN FRANCE
• Impressionism in France began in the middle of the 19 th century and
gained its most significant influence near the last quarter of the century
(Moffat 1).
• Was driven by multiple factors including: anti-establishment movements,
and influences from Asiatic as well as other foreign cultures.
• Artists’ of the time period crafted images of modern life, countering
earlier forms of art based in history and mythology (Moffat 1).
3. IMPRESSIONIST TREND
• Impressionism evolved from the realist movement.
• Artists’ wished to break away from traditional forms of art not only in the
understanding of the images but also techniques used.
• One of the revolutionary techniques used in Impressionist art was the
application of the paint. Very small brush strokes were used, focusing on
every minor detail, especially accurate depictions of light.
17. IMPRESSIONIST FOCUS
• Similar to the perceptions found in naturalist literature, impressionist
painting focuses on natural landscape and human experience in nature
(Poplawski 193).
• Natural elements found in the painting include: pastoral scenes, rural
society, villages, roads, bridges, fields, orchards, gardens, roofs, parks, and
rivers (Poplawski 193).
• The use of lighting in the paintings explores the “impression” of the
moment.
18. INFLUENCE ON LITERATURE
• Impressionist writing includes both realism and naturalism in opposition to
symbolism (Kronegger 25).
• The goal of the literature is to capture the human experience from a
realistic perspective.
• The literature from the time period deals with impressions found in nature
or in a raw settings (Poplawski 194).
• The visual imagery found in impressionist paintings can also be found in
impressionist literature.
• Similar to impressionist art, the literature is highly subjective, with many gaps to be
filled in by the reader, creating multiple impressions.
