The Origins of the Red Cross
In 1859, the young Henry Dunant had the idea of mobilising women in the
Italian village of Solferino to give first aid to the injured and dying,
abandoned by their own troops on the battlefield. On returning home,
Dunant recounted the experience in his « Memory of Solferino » which,
some years later, gave birth to the Red Cross organisation.
“Would it not be possible, in time of
peace and quiet, to form relief
societies for the purpose of having
care given to the wounded in wartime
by zealous, devoted and thoroughly
qualified volunteers?”
