4 days at The “Quebrada de Humahuaca” Gorge Jujuy province, Argentina Declared by UNESCO a Cultural and Natural Mankind Heritage Site in 2002
Day 1: Flight from Buenos Aires to Jujuy Jujuy province is about 1500 kilometres from Buenos Aires. The plane takes 2 to 2.30 hours. The arrival is to the capital of the province (San Salvador de Jujuy) and from there we take a bus up to Tilcara, where we will be lodged. This distance takes approximately 1 hour by bus.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca Gorge is found in the northeastern part of Argentina, in the Province of Jujuy. La Quebrada de Humahuaca is the perfect combination of spectacular landscapes and archaeological treasures. It is about 155 kilometres long. The circuit of this trip will take some of the more important towns of The Quebrada de Humahuaca Gorge: Tilcara, Purmamarca, Humahuaca, Huacalera, Maimará .
Tilcara Located in the lower part of the Río Huasamayo River basin, at 2900 m.a.s.l. Tilcara is one of the largest towns in the Quebrada de Humahuaca Gorge, with approximately 3000 people living there. It owes its name to the original pre Hispanic indigenous people that inhabited the area. The town was founded in the year 1586. Climate : It has a dry mild climate in the parts that border the Gorge, but the further away and uphill one gets, the colder the weather. Flora : In the fertile valleys you will find tree species such as willows, pepper trees, elms and acacias. Fauna : Regarding wildlife you will find guanacos, vicuñas, condors, eagles, fox, vizcachas and tayras.
The accomodations will be organized in the following way: groups from 5 to 7 persons lodged at small inns that stay a few meters/blocks between each other. One accompaning teacher/escort will be staying with each small group. Groups will have breakfast at it´s house and other meals all the groups together in different places and towns. Lodge at Tilcara
Day 2 - Morning The Pucará of Tilcara Fortified place It is found two kilometres from the town, after crossing on a typical bridge and then climbing uphill. Thus, from this old strategic place there is a wonderful encompassing view over the access to the Gorge. It is part of a defence chain which from above testifies to the amazing technological agricultural achievement of a people and their culture, capable to build fortresses to protect themselves from the hunting and gathering tribes further east, and maybe even to dare oppose the mighty Inca empire to which they finally succumbed towards the end of the XVth century. Pucará is one of the four fortified villages, which the original people of the Quebrada de Humahuaca Gorge built on top of strategic hills overlooking the Río Grande River. Over the years archaeologists have restored some areas of the dry-stone work.
To get a full idea of how life was for the people in this area we will visit the Tilcara Archaeological Museum, one of the most important museums of its kind in all of Argentina. Day 2 - Afternoon Tilcara Archaeological Museum There are observed representative materials of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the Andean area. A Mummy shows itself in excellent state of conservation. Also there are materials belonging to the incanato that occupied a sector of the Argentine northwest until 1520. There is a reproduction of one of the tombs found in the archaeological rescue carried out in Tilcara's urban page.
Day 3 Day at Purmamarca This small village of 339 people is very attractive due to the imposing and majestic colourful mountains that surround it. Its buildings are from the XVIIth century, which gives an interesting vision of its pre Hispanic origin. The picturesque layout of its streets is centred on the main church, which was built in 1648. The same as with other villages in the region, the houses in Purmamarca are of adobe, earth, clay and straw mixed, a technology passed down through the generations, the original abodes of these peoples which lifestyle and customs still permeate these areas. Any modern layout is from the end of the XIXth century. El paseo de los colorados Other attractions: -Cabildo Town Hall -Church -Handicraft Fair -Historic Algarrobo Carob Tree Mountains behind the village, of sedimentary origin from the Cretaceous period, approximately 65 million years ago. Salinas 126 km from Purmamarca
Day 3 126 km from Purmamarca: Salinas Grandes BIG SALT MINES cover more than twelve thousand hectares with its incandescence. The silence only is broken by the own steps on the dry surface. The Big Salt mines are develadas for the local workers, who explain to the dazzled visitors the whole process of extraction of the salt, and make small saline sculptures that they donate as recollection. To 126 Purmamarca's Kilometres, after climbing Lipán's slope up to Potrerillos's Bay, this sea of salt captivates the looks and the thought.
Day 4 Heading to Humahuaca – Stop at Huacalera North of Tilcara, 26 kilometres down Ruta Nacional Nº 9 National Route, just before arriving in the small village Huacalera, a monolith called the Tropic of Capricorn , erected in memory of the patriots that fought in the Wars of Independence from the Spanish Crown between the years 1810 and 1825. A small and picturesque place, Huacalera is located at 2641 m.a.s.l. and has at present a population of 335 people. In older days it was an Omaguaca indigenous parcel country, and as a reminder of those times there still stands the small myth filled chapel built in the year 1657 . It is a jewel of colonial architecture. It contains one of the most important and valuable collections of paintings of the Cuzco School of Painting as are the nine so called "Ángeles arcabuceros" or Harquebusier Angels, dressed as a heavenly militia, as well as the Wedding of the Virgin ''Casamiento de la Virgen'' and the Baptism of the Virgin "El Bautismo de la Virgen", both unique in their subject matter.
Day 4 Day at Humahuaca - Morning At 2940 m.a.s.l. on the banks of the Río Grande River, and 127 kilometres from San Salvador de Jujuy, down Ruta Nacional Nº 9 National Routs, lays the place which is considered the historical capital of the Gorge , and the nerve centre of the Puna highland town circuits called Humahuaca. Humahuaca has kept its old style buildings and streets. Low adobe houses, narrow streets paved in stone and old colonial streetlights gives the traveller then sensation that time has stood still in this place. A place well worth walking around in and exploring on foot.
Day 4 At the afternoon: Coctaca (located 10 kilometres east of Humahuaca) Coctaca is famous for its old pre Hispanic cultivation terraces. In the area you will find a very important agricultural ceramic archaeological site of the Omaguaca civilisation. There are several dwellings, long time fallen into ruins, but its most spectacular feature is its cultivation terraces, perfectly discernible, the largest in the region.
Day 5 The end: Heading to Buenos Aires
