- To have our values guide the society in which we live
- To preserve our own indiosyncratic ways of living
- To be a part of a community
- To have unfettered freedom in certain areas of our lives
- For position, prestige, status, self-worth
- For the chance to express ourselves
- Money: means to an end; subjective experience; spend gift money different from earnings; tips differently from paycheck; inheritance different from investments; we keep mental accounts of money, often “spending” it more than once; spend on credit more easily than with cash
- We value money more as it relates to our relative position than to an absolute number; sense of equity so strong even animals demand it; Capuchin monkey will “strike” when the “CEO” monkey is being paid for the “worker” monkey’s efforts when the differential in “pay” (cucumbers) reaches 5 to 1 or where the quality of the compensation (CEO gets grapes and “worker” monkey only cucumbers).
