Defining Cloud Computing ( with apologies to Rentsch )

“ ...Cloud Computing will be in the 2010's what structured
programming was in the 1970's. Everyone will be in favor of it.
Every vendor will promote their products as supporting it. Every
executive will pay lip service to it. Every business will implement
                                                                                                         “
                                                                                                         “
it (differently). And no one will know just what it is.

Driving Cloud Standards is an Ugly Business

“ RedMonk has always positioned itself on the side of openness and
positive community interaction, which is why after the recent muck
slinging and general unpleasantness in the Cloud standards space we’re
pleased to see some sanity returning with a new initiative from the Free
Software Foundation - the Free™ and Open™ Cloud Alliance™ (FOCA),
an industry-wide trade marketing association supporting Free™ and
Open™ Cloud Computing™ (FOCC). Perhaps most importantly, unlike
the Open Cloud Manifesto announced yesterday, FOCC actually has an
artefact on the table that we can all work with - namely the CloudLeft
                                                                                                       “
Public License (CPL); this won’t just be another talking shop.

Ugliness in the space is all around

Dell applied to trademark the term "cloud computing" (U.S. Trademark 77,139,082) in
the United States. The "Notice of Allowance" it received in July 2008 was canceled on
August 6, resulting in a formal rejection of the trademark application less than a week
            later

On 30 September 2008, USPTO issued a "Notice of Allowance" to CGactive LLC
(U.S. Trademark 77,355,287) for "CloudOS". A cloud operating system is a generic
operating system that "manage[s] the relationship between software inside the

computer and on the Web", such as Microsoft Azure Good OS LLC also announced
their "Cloud" operating system on 1 December 2008

The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) just announced the release of OVF
1.0 as a DMTF standard and suggested that OVF just might be a key building block
            for cloud computing interoperability.

The Open Cloud Consortium presented at the Cloud Computing Interoperability
Workshop that took place during the OMG Meeting in Crystal City, Virginia on March
            23, 2009.

Conclusion

            Bandwidth inversion and new multi-CPU & multi-Core
computing architectures make a truly distributed and
            networked computing model possible

Management complexity is the last straw that breaks the
IT infrastructure. The Cloud revolution will break the cost
escalation cycle of improving ROI and lowering TCO
            through simplification.
                     simplification

Opportunity exists for rethinking where the intelligence for
            infrastructure resource and application management
should reside. It should be in the network and not
duplicated in the server network and storage as it is today
                              server,

It is all about application-to-spindle
                                                         management on demand !!

We believe that the Cloud is transformational
and it will help you achieve IT Nirvana !

Every vendor will promote their products as supporting it. Every executive will pay lip service to it. Every business will implement “ “ it (differently). And no one will know just what it is. - Paraphrasing Rentsch, T. “Object Oriented Programming”; SIGPLAN Notices; Sept 1982; Vol.17 No.12; P51 © 2009 Kawa Objects, Inc. • 23. Driving Cloud Standards is an Ugly Business “ RedMonk has always positioned itself on the side of openness and positive community interaction, which is why after the recent muck slinging and general unpleasantness in the Cloud standards space we’re pleased to see some sanity returning with a new initiative from the Free Software Foundation - the Free™ and Open™ Cloud Alliance™ (FOCA), an industry-wide trade marketing association supporting Free™ and Open™ Cloud Computing™ (FOCC). Perhaps most importantly, unlike the Open Cloud Manifesto announced yesterday, FOCC actually has an artefact on the table that we can all work with - namely the CloudLeft “ Public License (CPL); this won’t just be another talking shop. - James Governor, Redmonk in April1, 2009 Blog - “Cloud Standards Breakthrough: New Cloud Source License” © 2009 Kawa Objects, Inc. Dr. Rao Mikkilineni & Vijay Sarathy 23
  • 24. Ugliness in the space is all around Dell applied to trademark the term "cloud computing" (U.S. Trademark 77,139,082) in the United States. The "Notice of Allowance" it received in July 2008 was canceled on August 6, resulting in a formal rejection of the trademark application less than a week later On 30 September 2008, USPTO issued a "Notice of Allowance" to CGactive LLC (U.S. Trademark 77,355,287) for "CloudOS". A cloud operating system is a generic operating system that "manage[s] the relationship between software inside the manage[s] computer and on the Web", such as Microsoft Azure Good OS LLC also announced their "Cloud" operating system on 1 December 2008 The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) just announced the release of OVF 1.0 as a DMTF standard and suggested that OVF just might be a key building block for cloud computing interoperability. The Open Cloud Consortium presented at the Cloud Computing Interoperability Workshop that took place during the OMG Meeting in Crystal City, Virginia on March 23, 2009. • 26. Conclusion Bandwidth inversion and new multi-CPU & multi-Core computing architectures make a truly distributed and networked computing model possible Management complexity is the last straw that breaks the IT infrastructure. The Cloud revolution will break the cost escalation cycle of improving ROI and lowering TCO through simplification. simplification Opportunity exists for rethinking where the intelligence for infrastructure resource and application management should reside. It should be in the network and not duplicated in the server network and storage as it is today server, © 2009 Kawa Objects, Inc. Dr. Rao Mikkilineni & Vijay Sarathy 26 26
