Introduction
Welcome to the small world of Opera web browser. This book is not
intended to be a user guide of Opera or a tour to get started. This book
doesn't teach you how to use a web browser to go to a website. But this
book is all about using the existing features on the browser to its
maximum. This book is intended to speed up your web browsing
experience by intelligent use of features. Most people are aware of many
features in a web browser but rarely use them. To be honest I am also a
member of that "most". In this book I share the issues I faced while
browsing Internet and features in Opera that helps to overcome those. In a
nutshell this is a no nonsense guide to speed up the Internet browsing
experience from a practical user perspective. I have covered the not so
widely used search options, different techniques to navigate web pages,
browsing in a slow or public environment and an introduction to
developer options. I hope this book will present you a new view about
using features in your web browser.
Coming to Opera, it has two different interfaces for Windows users. The
minimalistic single menu and the traditional menu bar.

The menus minimalistic approach are mentioned as Opera > throughout
the book. This book is based on version 12 of Opera but most features
mentioned in this book are there in Opera for years. This book doesn't
cover the Linux version of Opera. But almost all features mentioned in
this book are applicable to Linux version also.

Quick searches can make your journey on the web easier and efficient.
Anyone who spends a lot of time on Internet prefers quick, easy and
effective searches. No wonder how Google turned out to be this big. In
terms of browsers Opera is one the most search friendly browser. It
provides many search options not just with search engines but on
webpages as well. This section explains how shortcuts in Opera can make
search more productive and streamlined.
Search any site from address bar
Almost everyone's day on internet starts with a search. I use to search
multiple search sites like Wikipedia, Amazon or Ebay other than Google.

9. Opera has nice trick to save time by allowing search from address bar
using a shortcut. For example to search about iPhone 5 on Google I use g
iPhone 5 and in case I am searching Wikipedia for same, I use w iPhone
5.
Wikipedia search using shortcut w is shown in the above image. Opera
displays the site it searches and suggestions are also shown. Searching for
a text on the page can be done by using the shortcut f. For example to
search iPhone on the current page use f iPhone.
The search shortcuts can be viewed by clicking on the drop search box on
top right of the tab. These shortcuts can be edited using Manage Search
Engines. Custom searches can be created easily with and shortcuts can be
added. The next section explains the trick.
Add any Search to address bar
I was planning to buy a book and started to Barnes & Noble. I wanted to
add the search field to my Opera address bar, so whenever I want to
search I can do it from there itself. Opera allows adding custom search
from website's search box. It allows adding shortcuts so different search

10. engines can be searched from address bar itself. This is how it is done.
In the search box of the website, Right click > click Create Search. This
opens the search engine box.
Enter the name and add the keyword that is used as shortcut from the
address bar.
To search the Barnes & Noble site using the shortcut just created type bn
search word. For example to search about books about web technologies
use bn web.

11. This opens the website with searched page. From our example this opens
Barnes & Noble website with page showing search results on web.
Click on manage search engines to change the options for the added
search engine. Search engine preferences can be modified from Opera >
Settings > Preferences or Tools > Preferences from menu bar. If you are a
programmer add the search box of developer site to opera and see how

12. much time can be saved by these quick searches.
On a Mac preferences can be opened from Opera > Preferences.
Searching for a link in an article can be cumbersome particularly if the
page has lot of text and links. For search inside a page Opera can
differentiate between text and link. The next section how a quick search
can be made with this.
Search links and text
One day quite out of curiosity I started reading about Pizza and found
from Wikipedia that it was originated in Naples in Italy. I felt it may have
some connection with the history of Naples and thought of following the
link. Opera can help in these scenarios. It can search text as well as links.
It is very useful in this kind of scenario where one has to search a link to
follow the article.
This is how I accomplished the task. I can use "," (comma) for only links
and "." (period) for searching text. As I needed the link for the particular
page I used "," (comma) shortcut.
For searching for a word on a page Ctrl + F can be used to bring the
search box. It can also be done by using shortcut keyword f from address
bar.
On a Mac for search, shortcut is command + F.
Other than these above shortcuts search can be initiated from the search
box on the tab as well as from speed dial. One can set a different search
engine in search box and speed dial. This allows further search
customization as well.

13. What is speed dial?
Speed dial is opera term for visual bookmark that appears when a tab is
opened. This allows easy access to websites with a click rather than
typing the web address. User can add a website to speed dial by clicking
on the square speed dial box.

Navigating in Internet is like driving a car. Web browsers like cars have
ton lot on features to assist in navigating on the Internet. But when and
how to use these feature is more important aspect. Opera is one of the
most feature rich browsers in the globe. In this section I try to explain the
likely overlooked features and when to use them using real life
experience. I am confident that this will be most useful section in this
book.
