5. Performance Plan
► Outlines what is expected for the
upcoming year
► Includes:
► Performance goals
► Job responsibilities
► Development objectives
6. Probationary Performance Evaluation
► Employees receive probationary
progress reviews at six and twelve
months
► Ratings for probationary progress
reviews:
► Strong Performance
► Developing Performance
► Unacceptable Performance
7. Probationary Period
► May be extended for:
► Certain types of performance concerns
► Additional training is required
► Transfer to another department
► Will be extended for:
► Absences of more than 14 consecutive calendar
days (extension will be proportionate to the
number of days missed)
► Even with extensions, probationary period
cannot exceed 18 months.
8. Performance Evaluation

performance reviews each fall after
probationary period.

by the state legislature and budget

11. Human Resources Policies
► On July 1, 2006 the Higher Education Restructuring
Act went into effect allowing for the creation of
university staff
► As University Staff, Virginia Tech retains the right to
make changes to Human Resources polices except for
health insurance, retirement, worker’s compensation,
and access to the state’s grievance process
► Policies for classified staff are determined by Virginia’s
Department of Human Resources Management
