Collaborative communities require a wide range of face-to-face and online communication tools. Their socio-technical systems continuously grow, driven by evolving stakeholder requirements and newly available technologies. Designing tool systems that (continue to) match authentic community needs is not trivial. Collaboration patterns can help community members specify customized systems that capture their unique requirements, while reusing lessons learnt by other communnities. Such patterns are an excellent example of combining the strengths of creativity and rationale. In this chapter, we explore the role that collaboration patterns can play in designing the socio-technical infrastructure for collaborative communities. We do so via a cross-case analysis of three Dutch social innovation communities simultaneously being set-up. Our goal with this case study is two-fold: (1) understanding what social innovation is from a socio-technical lens and (2) exploring how the rationale of collaboration patterns can be used to develop creative socio-technical solutions for working communities.

Urban farming communities often consist of many disjoint initiatives, while having a strong need to overcome their fragmentation. Community mapping can help urban farmers make better sense of their collaboration. We describe a participatory community mapping approach being piloted in an urban farming community-building project in and around the city of Tilburg. The approach combines (1) a basic community mapping language, (2) a state of the art web-based community visualization tool, and (3) a participatory mapping process to support the community-building efforts. We outline the approach being developed and present initial results of applying it in the Tilburg case.

Academic research is under threat from issues like a lack of resources, fraud, and societal isolation. Such issues weaken the academic research process, from the framing of research questions to the evaluation of impact. After (re)defining this process, we examine how the academic research community could be expanded using the Internet. We examine two existing science-society collaborations that focus on data collection and analysis and then proceed with a scenario that covers expanding research stages like research question framing, dissemination, and impact assessment.

Community Informatics is a wide-ranging field of inquiry and practice, with many paradigms, disciplines, and perspectives intersecting. Community Informatics research and practice build on several methodological pillars: contexts/values, cases, process/methodology, and systems. Socio-technical patterns and pattern languages are the glue that help connect these pillars. Patterns define relatively stable solutions to recurring problems at the right level of abstraction, which means that they are concrete enough to be useful, while also sufficiently abstract to be reusable. The goal of this paper is to outline a practical approach to improve CI research and practice through collaboration patterns. This approach should help to strengthen the analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation of socio-technical community systems. The methodology is illustrated with examples from the ESSENCE (E-Science/Sensemaking/Climate Change) community.

Social innovation as a process is about multiple stakeholders working together on joint, economically and socially sustainable solutions for wicked societal problems. Social innovation both co-creates value for individual stakeholders involved, and contributes to the common good. It has been an important theme in the the Dutch city of Tilburg and the surrounding region of Midden-Brabant for years. A successful regional social innovation ecosystem exists. Knowledge sharing about the innovations remains a bottleneck, however. Two initiatives to increase regional social innovation knowledge sharing capacity are presented: the social innovation storytelling architecture and the Tilburg public library prototype KnowledgeCloud for catalyzing knowledge sharing across regional themes of interest.

Society consists of a web of interconnected communities. A large body of research and practice exists on how to make communities work. Still, the intersection and interaction of multiple communities - the development and use of their inter-communal commons - is ill-understood. Social innovation is the process in which relevant stakeholders jointly develop solutions to wicked problems that none of them can solve on their own. As such, it is a prime example of the need for multiple stakeholder communities collaborating. We propose a process for building a networked community-commons called knowledge weaving. This is a reflective sensemaking effort in which existing communal knowledge sharing practices, initiatives, and resources are tied together into coherent commons-based knowledge fabrics that support intercommunal collaboration, such as for social innovation. We illustrate the approach with the case of the European Social Innovation Week 2015 pre-events.

Experimental Modes of Civic Engagement in Civic Tech is an investigation into what it means to build civic tech with, not for. It answers the question, "what's the difference between sentiment and action?" The project led by Laurenellen McCann, and it deepens her work in needs-responsive, community-driven processes for creating technology with real people and real communities for public good. This project falls under Smart Chicago's work on the Knight Community Information Challenge grant awarded under their Engaged Communities strategy to the Chicago Community Trust "as it builds on its successful Smart Chicago Project, which is taking open government resources directly into neighborhoods through a variety of civic-minded apps" This document is a compendium of writing by Laurenellen created as a primer for our April 4, 2015 convening at the Chicago Community Trust.

Case Law Analysis - Intellectual Property In this unit, you will select a case law pertaining to the topic of intellectual property. Each case law analysis allows you to express yourself as clearly and fully as possible in dissecting a court decision. The purpose of the assignment is two-fold: 1. To give you the opportunity to read a real court decision. 2. To challenge you to think about how you would have decided the case. In your case law analyses, you must be able to navigate the court's decision and summarize it; you are not expected to act as a judge or an advocate. Using your selected court decision, prepare an analysis that responds to the following: 1. Articulates the importance, context, purpose, and relevance of law in a business environment: . Identify the parties who are before the court. . Provide a brief background to the problem. Summarize the facts in no more than 2–3 paragraphs. . Identify what is the specific disagreement between the parties. . Explain the ruling of the court in no more than 1–2 paragraphs. · Evaluates key judicial concepts that influence the decisions related to business: . Was there a dissenting opinion? If so, explain why some of the judges or justices disagreed with the majority in the decision. . Do you agree with the court's decision? Why or why not? You may choose any court case, either state or federal, as the basis for your case law analysis; however, the case should be applicable to the assignment topic. The recommended Web sites for researching and locating a case are listed in the Resources area. Your analysis should be no more than two pages, double-spaced. References and citations are to adhere to APA formatting and style guidelines. Prior to submitting your assignment, be sure to review the scoring guide to ensure you have met all of the grading criteria. RESEARCH PROPOSAL Community Driven Urban Design: Social Practice Tactics for Addressing Issues of the Built Environment ABSTRACT: Several professionals in the field of architecture and urban design employ creative tactics focused on social impact, civic dialogue, and grass roots placemaking. Drawing on socially responsible urban design theory, as well as principles of arts- based civic engagement and social change, these efforts have gained momentum in the 21st century due to a variety of economic, governmental, social and technological factors. This research capstone will include an extensive literature review through two courses – PPPM 523 Urban Revitalization and an independent reading course on “bottom-up” urban design with Professor Philip Speranza – as well as web-based document analysis of select case studies. The purpose of this study is to locate these tactics within current urban redevelopment policy and arts-based community development theory, and outline elements of best practice as a means of advancing the field of community driven urban design. Large Techno Social Systems (LTSS) involve leveraging technological advancements and digital platforms to improve access to essential services, enhance quality of life, and ensure social inclusivity. In LTSS, people cannot be mere users of networked technologies and services designed for optimization purposes. Their behaviour should become one of the key levers for designing technologies turning them into real “Smart citizens” that teach their surrounding environment (and embedded devices) but learn reciprocally from it. LTSS can be realized by promoting smart communities which leverage technology, data, and innovation to improve the quality of life for its residents, enhance sustainability, and optimize the use of resources. Human-centric technology can empower citizens to actively engage in societal decision-making processes, participate in deliberative systems, and contribute to societal welfare. On the other hand, technological advancements, including data analytics and artificial intelligence, can inform evidence-based policymaking and planning processes. Indeed, digital technologies have the potential to influence human behaviour change by providing information, personalized feedback, social support, targeted interventions, and opportunities for learning. This work explores two approaches to realize LTSS driven smart communities that leverage digital technologies to achieve a higher collaboration and reciprocal learning between machines and people. On one hand, co-production in smart communities promotes behaviour change by empowering citizens in the co-design and co-delivery process, designing user-centric solutions, leveraging local knowledge, fostering collaboration, and facilitating capacity building. On the other hand, Citizen Science can inspire and enable behaviour change that leads to more sustainable, responsible, and community-oriented actions by promoting awareness, empowering individuals, and facilitating collaboration.

The challenges posed by the complexity of our times requires the Design discipline to understand the many complex relationships behind the social, business, technology and territory dimensions of each project. Such nature of complex systems lays not only inside design projects, but also inside the design processes that generate them, and the ability of organizing them through meta-design approaches is becoming strategic. Since the turn of the century, the design discipline has increasingly moved its scope from single users to local and online communities, from isolated projects to system of solutions. This shift has brought researchers and practitioners to investigate tools and strategies to enable mass- scale interactions by adopting several models and tools coming from software development and web-based technologies: Open Source, P2P, DDD (Diffuse, Distributed, and Decentralized) systems. This influence has matured over the years, and if we observed in the past how such systemic models can be applied in the design practice (part 1), we are facing now a new phase where Design will have an increasing role in enabling such systems through the analysis, visualization and design of their collaborative tools, platforms, processes and organizations (part 2). This scope falls into the Meta-Design domain, where designers build environments for the collaborative design of open processes and their resulting organizations (part 3). In this paper, we address this phenomena by elaborating the Open Meta-Design framework (part 4), that provides a way for designing open, collaborative and distributed processes (including those in the professional design domain). The paper positions the framework among current meta-design and design approaches and develops its features of modeling, analysis, management and visualization of processes. This framework is based on four dimensions: conceptual (describing the philosophy, context and limitations of the approach), data (describing the ontology of design processes), design (visualizing designing processes) and software (managing the connections between the ontology and the visualization, the data and design dimensions). We believe that such a framework could potentially facilitate the participation and the creation of open, collaborative and distributed processes, enabling therefore more relevant interactions for communities. As a conclusion, the paper provides a roadmap for developing and testing the Open Meta-Design framework, and therefore evaluating its relevance in supporting complex projects (part 5).

For me, Indonesia is the smell of kretek, the taste of tahu tempeh goreng, the 24/7 life, the becak and street vendors in the streets. In Jakarta only a few of these are visible. The becak has already been banned from the inner-city because of the association with underdevelopment and causes congestion and now also street vendors are next.. Street vendors are often associated with traffic jams, pollution and crime. Many news articles have been written about street vendors causing congestion and how the city government reacts by removing and/or relocating the street vendors often to off-street public market buildings: almost weekly they are mentioned in the newspapers, related to relocation issues or riots. These relocation processes do not always work out as planned and street vendors riot or return to their old familiar spot. This triggered something in me. I had to see this for myself and went to Jakarta for a period of three weeks. During my stay I talked to street vendors but also to local people and tourists, not only to find out their opinions on each other and the public space, but also to find out underlying motives and thoughts. I went to visit several areas where street vendors operate or operated until very recently. The government did their job clearing the streets or in other cases started the relocation of street vendors to public market buildings. This often did not work out and resulted in street vendors returning to the streets or even violence. As a designer of space – and a food lover – this socio spatial problem truly fascinates me and led me to write this thesis. This master thesis ‘Integrating Jakarta’s Street Vendors Into Architecture’ is written in the name of Delft University of Technology as a student of the architecture department within the Explorelab 18 studio. In this studio I am able to explore my fascination, not only my fascination with the highly interesting city of Jakarta, the ‘Indonesian culture’ and its people, but also to explore my role as an architect. This research therefore consists of theoretical, but most of all empirical studies. When I mentioned to my research mentor Gregory Bracken that I see my role as an architect as a mediator, he replied the architect could very well be the catalyst. According to the Cambridge dictionary a catalyst can be defined as ‘an event or person that causes great change’. I hope in my life I will be able to contribute to making the world a little bit betterefbejlfnwefewfnfewmifnewfnew;nfewfnefewfovendors in Jakarta, what is their background and how do they work? How can street vendors best be facilitated? What can we learn from relocation processes conducted by the city government? The street vendor and profiles of other users will be set out in user stories. From this information ‘needs’ can be defined. Part III discusses the location of intervention: Sarinah. Located in the Central Business district this department store was the firs
