Although the Home Page will have a link to the members area, it
will focus overwhelmingly on two things:
 Generating new interest among families in attending
accredited camps in Ontario with a means to find these
       camps.
 Generating new interest for camps, suppliers, and potential
sponsors to become accredited and commercial members.
In the design of the entire website and in particular the
homepage, elegance and cleanliness will be preferred over
comprehensiveness. And a feeling of “campiness” will be
important… but not at the expense of creating a feeling of
                      professionalism.
The infrastructure of the database will be one that coordinates
office functions with online presence i.e. one database for camp
information, mailing lists, event registration, the standards etc.
The content of the entire website will be one that can be fully
managed by lay staff, accessible from any computer, and
customizable to a variety of permission settings e.g. giving the
standards committee access to edit the content related to standards.
The website will provide a means for OCA members to dialogue and
                      become engaged online.
Except for 1 custom component: The website will utilize free and
sometimes fee based plugin and/or utilities – i.e. the goal: to be
immune to claims that we attempted to reinvent the wheel.
The 1 custom component? The creation of a Camp Search Utility –
one that helps parents find just the right OCA camp(s) after
completing all or part of the available search criteria fields.
Attention will be paid to ensure that a section of the website attends to the
                     individual needs of all stakeholders:
Camp Members, Individual Members, Associate and Honorary Life
Members, Commercial Members, The General Public, Prospective and existing
camp Parents and Campers, Young People seeking
Employment, Educators, Guidance Counsellors, Social Workers, Special Needs
Support Workers in the community, and The media in particular in times of
                                      crisis.
The website will be Search Engine Optimized, Social Network
Compatible, and flexible so that marketing campaigns can be easily
                            integrated.
To be worthwhile, the new website will have to be far far better than the old website
especially in its ability to drive traffic to the site so that it can:
 Generate more business for you
          • Tell the story of summer camp
          • Clearly define the advantages of choosing an accredited camp in Ontario
 Unify our many many systems.
 Create new opportunities for communication and engagement between members

Oca Website Update for the AGM 2012

  • 1.
  • 2.
  • 3.
  • 4. Although the Home Page will have a link to the members area, it will focus overwhelmingly on two things:  Generating new interest among families in attending accredited camps in Ontario with a means to find these camps.  Generating new interest for camps, suppliers, and potential sponsors to become accredited and commercial members.
  • 5. In the design of the entire website and in particular the homepage, elegance and cleanliness will be preferred over comprehensiveness. And a feeling of “campiness” will be important… but not at the expense of creating a feeling of professionalism.
  • 6.
  • 7.
  • 8. The infrastructure of the database will be one that coordinates office functions with online presence i.e. one database for camp information, mailing lists, event registration, the standards etc.
  • 9. The content of the entire website will be one that can be fully managed by lay staff, accessible from any computer, and customizable to a variety of permission settings e.g. giving the standards committee access to edit the content related to standards.
  • 10. The website will provide a means for OCA members to dialogue and become engaged online.
  • 11. Except for 1 custom component: The website will utilize free and sometimes fee based plugin and/or utilities – i.e. the goal: to be immune to claims that we attempted to reinvent the wheel.
  • 12. The 1 custom component? The creation of a Camp Search Utility – one that helps parents find just the right OCA camp(s) after completing all or part of the available search criteria fields.
  • 13. Attention will be paid to ensure that a section of the website attends to the individual needs of all stakeholders: Camp Members, Individual Members, Associate and Honorary Life Members, Commercial Members, The General Public, Prospective and existing camp Parents and Campers, Young People seeking Employment, Educators, Guidance Counsellors, Social Workers, Special Needs Support Workers in the community, and The media in particular in times of crisis.
  • 14. The website will be Search Engine Optimized, Social Network Compatible, and flexible so that marketing campaigns can be easily integrated.
  • 15. To be worthwhile, the new website will have to be far far better than the old website especially in its ability to drive traffic to the site so that it can:  Generate more business for you • Tell the story of summer camp • Clearly define the advantages of choosing an accredited camp in Ontario  Unify our many many systems.  Create new opportunities for communication and engagement between members

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. I think about Talia growing up in the worldWhen I look at pictures of camp or of my family in the city, I think about the wonderful world that this is to bring children intoCareful note of the plural word “children”We are at a very important time in the worldAs a people, it will be our generations that determine the path of history in a way more significant than any other generation that has come beforeI am speaking about the environment in particular but in truth there are other issues as wellWhen I first came to Walden, Jen, Howie, Sari, and myself noticed so so many things beautiful about Camp – but one thing that was ugly namely the amount of garbage createdSpeak about boosters, plates, addition, staff – we didn’t realize how large a project this really wasThis has been a the most significant financial project we have undertakenAnd thankfully the most importantNot only does it allow us to produce less garbage – it allows us to send the right message to our campers, to Talia, to all the children and adults that come through our gatesDishwasher… a small decisions?Or is it!So there – we did it! It costs a lot of money and is taking a lot of time to decide on and install but it is done!(Ok I didn’t really do it, Brian is doing it! We are just paying for it!)But there it is… a small decisions and we have transformed the whole message we are sending to Walden’s kids and staffThis is what I want you to take away from your session tomorrow and from this weekend: You really have the opportunity to make an impact on people with the small decisions that you make.Seemingly small choices  Large outcomesUse the ‘power’ wisely!Speak about the process – the tubs, the racksSpeak about PARTNERSHIP – this won’t work if melmac leaves the dining hallSpeak about Seemingly Small Changes as it relates to the dishwasherI am so happy that many of the Kitchen Staff are here – it gives us the opportunity to thank them in advance for taking on this challenge! And others by the way like constantly updating the menu and making more things home-made, from scratch, and with basic ingredientsWe will still have chicken fingers – it is an evolution, one step at a time. But certainly with each passing year our menu is shifting significantlyWhile on the topic of the kitchen and additions, I do want to take this opportunity to recognize our Maintenance Staff.Talk about Walking around the site last weekAccomplishments of the Maintenance Staff:In the last five years, we have installed: two rollerblade hockey rinks, two basketball courts, a playground and surrounding seating facility, a commercial generator with a redesign of the main electrical network, a new camp gathering area called “the ‘Den”, a new low ropes course, and several shade shelters! We have made major improvements to our climbing wall and laundry areas, and have purchased all kinds of new equipment including: water filtration and purification systems, new sailboats and canoes, mountain bikes, replaced all of camp’s sports equipment, and two new commercial dryers. We have made the following refurbishments: reflooring of Omni, installation of two new septic tanks and beds, renovation of the main office and installation of broadband internet capabilities for email communication between camp and parents, replacement of several docks, redesign of the tuck shop to create a drinking station, renovations to several staff cabins, professional management of the forests on camp property… And all this is not including the day to day work of keeping camp safe and beautiful! We don’t think about things like shovelling the snow off the roofs etc.Oh ya, and in addition to all of this, we bought a new motor and refurbished all 3 boats – we considered telling you they were brand new!
