16. What is active learning?
• Active learning is when learners
are engaged in more activities
than just listening.
• They are involved in dialogue,
debate, writing and problem
solving, as well as higher-order
thinking.
Bonwell and Eison
17. From simple to complex
• As you move from simple to complex
tasks, two types of learning required:
• Collaborative learning: carefully
structured. Group formation and
learner roles important
• Cooperative learning: a form of
collaborative learning that has five
specific criteria to maximise learning
18. Cooperative learning
Five key components:
1. Positive interdependence: each individual
depends on and is accountable to the others
2. Individual accountability: each person in the
group learns the materials
3. Promotive interaction: group members help
one another, share information, clarify
4. Social skills: emphasis on interpersonal skills
5. Group processing: assessing how effectively
they are working with one another
21. Use combinations
• Each trainee, child, adult, learner
has a unique combination lock –
the way they will learn. Use that!
• This brings us to mass
customisatisation!
22. Learner readiness
• What is more important for a learner
to learn new skills, knowledge and
attitude in face-to-face, classroom
setting?
1. Trainer expertise and effective
delivery, or
2. Learner willingness and motivation
24. Wali on learner readiness
A learner will only develop a
skill
if they have the
will

25. What is will & skill?
• Will = desire,
• Skill = ability,
hunger, drive,
competence,
ambition,
capability,
willingness, your
something you
reason for being, are known for,
mindset
niche, skillset
27. To increase…
• Will = find out

solving (PBL)

32. In summary…
Gen Y’ers/Millennials:
• Teachers, principals, bosses, parents do

69. Try OST
• You may like to try OST some
time and see how results are
different and learner motivation
increases!
