Monterrey Mexico Safety Recommendations
- Avoid driving alone and/or at night if possible.
- Try to use a well trained security driver. If that is not possible, carefully seek and receive training
in defensive and evasive driving. Andrews International can provide a wide range of personal
security training, including defensive and evasive driving techniques.
- Know where you are and where you are going before venturing out. Monterrey streets have
changed a lot due to Hurricane Alex.
- Identify alternate routes to and from your destinations (Hotel-Airport, Offices-Hotel,
Restaurant-Hotel, etc...) Identifying the possible alternating routes ahead of time will provide ways
around possible street blockages or road blocks which have been set up around the City. A little
planning can save you a lot of time, inconvenience and possible harm.
- Try not to use the internal/inside traffic lane. You can be blocked in with no room to take
evasive or defensive actions.
- Do not stay in hotels in downtown Monterrey. Sorry, but they have targeted for violence.
- Stay in the San Pedro Garza García area (Camino Real, Quinta Real, Safi, etc.), is the safest area
of the city.
- Also use the restaurants in this area (San Pedro Garza Garcia).
- Use the toll road in route to the airport; avoid the free route (Miguel Aleman Ave is blocked on a
regular basis).
- Use someone (maybe a security employee) to monitor your journey and whereabouts in the city.
- Have someone monitoring the media to try in advance to avoid the blockade avenues (with
possible and good communication with the travelers)
- In the worst case. If you are threatened directly stay in or near your car. Your training and skill
level will determine the risk of trying to escape or surrender. Surrender only your keys and vehicle.
This can be life saving. Without training, give up the keys and anything requested. Do not risk your
life for the car or other belongings... The objective of the blockades has been principally to block the
main routes, not to hijack or steal cars.
