4. I CSG BACKGROUNDER
CSG (Coatings Specialist Group) has quickly evolved from a small commercial coatings
company formed in 2005, to a global player in sustainable, environmentally-beneficial surface
treatments. Today CSG’s PURETi™ and Surface Antimicrobial System™ (SAS) products and
services are used to minimize the spread of disease and improve the environment by some
of the world’s most prominent organizations. CSG’s client list includes: the U.S. Military, New
York Yankees, U.S. Olympic Teams, Los Angeles Community College District, and over 1,200
educational facilities. To date, CSG’s unique and innovative technologies have been applied to
over 50 million square feet of surface area and millions of pounds of laundry.
In June 2008, CSG introduced PURETi photocatalytic surface treatments, which represent one
of the 21st century’s biggest breakthroughs in commercialized green technology. Supported by
13 international patents for the formulation and production of the sustainable surface treatments,
PURETi is on the cusp of helping governments and businesses around the globe improve
air quality, conserve water and energy and reduce maintenance costs by up to 50 percent. A
2009 laboratory study conducted by renowned environmental engineering expert Dr. Alexander
Orlov, of Stony Brook University, revealed that coating a surface with PURETi reduces the
presence of harmful nitrous oxide (NOx) in the air by almost 80 percent.
PURETi ultraviolet photocatalytic technology (UV-PCO) transforms surfaces into sustainable,
self-cleaning, air-purifying, and odor-eliminating materials. The technology uses energy from
ultraviolet light to continuously and proactively break-down all organic materials, including
grime, bio-film, smog-causing green house gases, harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
and stubborn organic odors such as tobacco smoke or fire damage. Typically, surfaces treated
with PURETi products need to be cleaned half as often and it’s twice as easy when it is done.
With an efficacy of up to three years, PURETi cuts water, energy, chemicals and labor used in
cleaning in half.
CSG’s working relationship with franchises in the National Football League (NFL) triggered a
demand for a coating that would proactively and continually combat bacteria on surfaces and
fabrics throughout facilities in all of pro sports including the National Basketball Association
(NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), and National Hockey League (NHL). CSG partnered
with ÆGIS Environment in 2005 to bring its patented Microbe Shield technology to CSG. With
this advanced technology in hand, CSG’s research and development team created a family of
antimicrobial treatments that inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, mold, and fungi for years.
The unique treatments were the first of their kind to be specifically designed for use on specific
substrates, such as washable fabrics and synthetic turf systems.
This unique family of antimicrobial products was turned into a comprehensive process called
the Surface Antimicrobial System or SAS. CSG grabbed headlines in May 2006, when SAS
was called upon to combat rising concerns about Staph and MRSA in the sports community.
The thorough process eliminates 99.9% of germs and bacteria, including staph and MRSA,
and protects against the future growth of harmful microbial contaminants. By 2007 CSG began
offering the products on a consumer basis as a result of their growing demand for use in everyday
applications. The SAS line of EPA registered antimicrobial products are safe, hypoallergenic,
easy to apply and are used today in educational, athletic, and facility settings. Most recently,
the SAS family of products was called upon to treat facilities with suspected cases of the H1N1
Virus (Swine Flu).

Surface Antimicrobial System Plays Key Role in Proactive Defense
Against Bacteria
• SAS is a comprehensive process that kills 99.9% of illness-causing microorganisms and works
24/7 to inhibit the growth of a wide-array of bacteria, mold and fungi on any surface or fabric for
up to three years.
• SAS brand is comprised of 5 EPA registered products specifically designed for use on specific
substrates:
Surfaces: SurfaceAide™ 1000, SurfaceAide™ XL, SurfaceClean™
Fabrics: FabricAide ®
Synthetic Turf: TurfAide™
• The Comprehensive Athletic Treatment Center (CATC) conducted a six-month study, headed by
Dr. Thomas D. Kohl, MD, and found that wrestling teams that treated their mats and washable
fabrics with SAS experienced significantly fewer skin aliments than teams that did not.
• Over 30 million square feet applied to surfaces nationwide.
• Bacteria and viruses can live on fabrics and surfaces for days and can easily transfer from
surface to skin. Service and consumer products represent a long-term and comprehensive
solution to the proliferation of disease, including staph infections, MRSA, Swine Influenza,
SARS, Avian Influenza, Ring Worm and other pathogenic fungi.
• SAS professional services currently used by high profile customers: U.S. Military, New York
Yankees, franchises in the NFL, NBA, and NHL, and U.S. Olympic Teams.
• Products are safe, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and will not create adaptive microorganisms like
“Super Bugs”.
• Primary benefits of SAS include: long lasting infection control, odor and stain prevention, and
improved longevity of the treated material.
• Infections in the hospital are the fourth largest killer in America. In the U.S., two million patients
contract infections in hospitals per year, and about 103,000 die as a result. This number is as
many deaths as from AIDS, breast cancer and auto accidents combined.

8. II SAS ANTIMICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY
Understanding SAS Antimicrobial Core Technology
ANTIMICROBIAL TREATMENTS
Antimicrobial treatments associated with treated surfaces and goods and a wide variety of end-uses
have been part of the industry for hundreds of years. The list of problems caused by microorganisms
and reasons for using antimicrobials includes: 1) Prevention of microbial putrification, deterioration, and
rot (preservation) of process solutions and finished goods, 2) Reducing bacteria and fungi that cause
musty, mildew, and putrid odors, 3) The esthetic problems associated with mold and mildew stain,
and 4) To reduce the risks associated with medical conditions that can be caused by microorganisms
associated with the presence on or the transfer from medical devices. These could include risks of,
infectious organism amplification in fabrics, microbial transfer from one person or site to another, or
the growth of allergy stimulating organisms, their spores, body parts, or metabolic products.
Concern over traditional antimicrobial technologies and their mode of action is well founded. Such
technologies present risks associated with their ability to be transported onto and through the skin
and uncontrolled into the environment. They are also prone to sub-lethal levels and subsequent
ineffectiveness or microbial adaptation. Use of such materials in medical settings, around food
processing or services, or in consumer uses requires a careful review of toxicological data, routes
of contact, and risks.
ÆGIS MICROBE SHIELD ® TECHNOLOGY (AEM 5700 Antimicrobial)
The core of the SAS technology stems from the ÆGIS Microbe Shield technology (AEM 5700
Antimicrobial), developed 30 years ago by Dow Corning. The ÆGIS Microbe Shield Technology, by
its polymeric and chemically bonded nature, provides a technological answer to the risks associated
with the traditional leaching or ionizing antimicrobials. Control of microorganisms on the treated
surface can be accomplished with good performance and trivial toxicological risk.
The property of AEM 5700 Antimicrobial that provides for the physical contact and rupturing of
the cell membranes of single-celled organisms and the association and inactivation of viruses
revolves around the chemical structure of the monomer and subsequent final polymer. Contact
with the oleophilic moieties of the polymer and the quaternized nitrogen of the polymer by the
cell membranes of single-celled organisms causes the physical rupture and inactivation of the
membrane, the inhibition and death of the target single-celled organism, and the association and
inactivation of viruses.
Manufacturers of a wide variety of consumer and commercial goods have evaluated the safety and
utility of this treatment and used it safely and successfully for over 30 years. These include higher
risk end-use materials such as: surgical drapes (the treatment is on the fenestration area next to
the incision site), other medical goods, and Drypers disposable baby diapers (the treatment is on
the top-sheet next to the baby’s skin). These and other consumer products such as socks and
underwear have been treated and sold with this technology since 1976 with no untoward effects.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
The active ingredient of AEM 5700 Antimicrobial is a monomer, 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl
dimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride. This material is used by dilution in water allowing for the
formation of the hydroxy form of the monomer. In this form, the chemistry is both covalently and
ionically bondable to receptive surfaces. On drying (hydrolysis), this monomer will homopolymerize
forming an infinite polymer.
The AEM-5700 Antimicrobial as an organofunctional silane bonds to surfaces and then to itself to
produce treatments that kill a variety of one-celled organisms. The basic chemistry has been well
described in peer-reviewed publications and patents. The foundation paper by Speier and Malek
is the most descriptive of these bonding and activity phenomena. (Attached) This chemistry and its
bonding capacity allow it to have unusual levels of durability and facilitate the transformation of a
material into an antimicrobial contact surface.
Silane Quaternary Ammonium Compounds
In the mid-1960’s, researchers discovered that
antimicrobial organofunctional silanes could be
chemically bound to receptive substrates by what
were believed to be Si-O linkages. The method was described as orienting the organofunctional
silane in such a way that hydrolyzable groups on the silicon atom were hydrolyzed to silanols
and the silanols formed chemical bonds with each other and the substrate. The resultant surface
modification, when an antimicrobial moiety such as a quaternary nitrogen was included, provided
for the antimicrobial to be oriented away from the surface 1.
The attachment of this chemical to surfaces appears to involve two
processes. First and most important is a very rapid process that coats
the substrate with the cationic species one molecule deep. This is an ion
exchange process by which the cation of the silane quaternary ammonium
compound replaces protons from water on the surface. It has long been
known that most surfaces in contact with water generate negative
electrical charges at the interface between water and the surface. This
mechanism is further supported by data generated with a radioactive
silane quaternary ammonium compound. During the treatment, depletion
of the radioactivity from solution was almost immediate by an amount
corresponding to that sufficient to cover the surface one layer deep, even
on surfaces that contain no functionality. Similar results are published for
many organic quaternary ammonium compounds. The second process
is unique to materials such as silane quaternary ammonium compounds
that have silicon functionality enabling them to polymerize, after they have
coated the surface, to become almost irremovable even on surfaces with
which they cannot react, covalent bonding to that surface will also occur
and it is also possible to have intermolecular polymerization2.

10. II SAS ANTIMICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY continued
Works of Abbott, Isquith, Roth, and Walters 3,4,5,6 further elaborate the antimicrobial utility
of surfaces modified with silane quaternary ammonium compounds. The specific utility of
3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (ÆGIS™ Antimicrobial, formerly
SYLGARD® Treatment based or AEM 5700® Antimicrobial Agent) was described in their work and
subsequent works of Gettings and Triplett7, Speier and Malek8, Hayes and White9, McGee, Malek,
and White10, and White and Olderman11.
DURABILITY
Durability of any medical device, textile product, nonwoven wipes, building materials, furnishings, or
building surface modifying treatment has importance at many phases of a products life. This includes
at the time of manufacture, during transport and storage, during use, and during disposal.
The ÆGIS Microbe Shield Technology (AEM 5700 Antimicrobial) provides an extraordinary profile
of durability, safety, and benefits in use that are well documented. Current uses and the extensive
laboratory and “real-world” database provide a high degree of confidence in the appropriateness
for the use of this treatment on goods that contact the skin and are used on medical devices. Part
of this extensive database is discussed here and focuses on the durability of the treatment during
storage of treated goods.
In support of the U.S. EPA registration (EPA Reg. # 68881-1) for this treatment a series of durability
and shelf life tests were done to substantiate the durability of the treatment. The most significant of
these data are presented in the referenced papers and available on request.
CSG has registered their ready-to-use antimicrobial formulations based on the ÆGIS Microbe
Shield Technology (AEM-5700 Antimicrobial) with the US EPA (EPA Reg. # 83135-1) and State EPA
organizations. Our support data show clearly the equivalency to the substrates that were used in
the US EPA AEM 5700 Antimicrobial registration testing.
Along with the development of antimicrobial products, CSG incorporated a special spray technique
that allows its application on virtually any surface in facilities ranging from sports facilities, training
and weight rooms, schools, to hospitals and clinics with minimal disruption of daily activities.

A: Professional applications of SurfaceAide 1000 last for up to 3 years and is warranted for this
time span. SurfaceAide 1000 applied by the customer is warranted for up to 1 year. SurfaceAide
XL will provide protection for up to 90 days.
• Q: What surfaces can I apply SurfaceAide antimicrobial technology to?
A: SurfaceAide is ideal for high traffic, high contact touch points and surfaces where microbial
contamination is of concern. It can be applied to any hard, non-porous surface.
• Q: Is this antimicrobial technology safe to use?
A: Yes. All products are EPA registered and are water based, non-toxic and non-sensiting to
human skin.
• Q: Why is SurfaceClean necessary in the SAS system?
A: SurfaceClean is a powerful disinfectant specifically formulated to work in synergy with
SurfaceAide treated surfaces. It is important to disinfect surfaces before applying SurfaceAide,
as this first step will eliminate 99.9% of bacteria and germs on the surface and will allow
SurfaceAide to work effectively. SurfaceClean is effective against a broad spectrum of
microorganisms, including the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus.
• Q: After treating the surface with SurfaceAide, do I still have to clean the surface and if so, are
there restrictions on what types of cleaning chemicals I can use?
A: Yes, any surface treated with SurfaceAide products will still need to be cleaned on a regular
basis, but application of harsh chemicals will not be necessary. SurfaceClean, the cleaner/
disinfectant developed by CSG, was designed to work in synergy with SurfaceAide treated
surfaces and equipment. By cleaning the SurfaceAide treated surface, the antimicrobial is able
to effectively and continuously control the growth of harmful contamination.

• Q: How are SurfaceAide products applied?
A: The preferred method of applying SurfaceAide 1000 is through trained and certified applicators,
who use an electrostatic sprayer. This ensures complete coverage of the antimicrobial on the surface.
Applying SurfaceAide 1000 and SurfaceAide XL yourself can be done through various methods,
including spraying and wiping the product onto surfaces.
• Q: Is SAS a cost effective solution?
A: Yes. To be guaranteed the same efficacy and 24/7 protection of SAS, surfaces and fabrics
would have to use heavy chemical disinfectant every time a surface or fabric was touched round
the clock. The material and labor cost savings alone makes SAS a sound financial decision.
• Q: How do I treat my fabrics with SAS?
A: To treat all washable fabrics you would use FabricAide. To apply FabricAide simply pour 4 oz.
into a load of clean laundry during the rinse cycle. After the load of laundry is dried, an extremely
durable bond will be formed to the garment providing active antimicrobial protection against the
odors, stains and discoloration caused by bacteria, mold, fungi and mildew.
• Q: How long will the antimicrobial protection in FabricAide last?
A: One rinse cycle with FabricAide provides antimicrobial protection on your fabrics for up to 30
washes.
• Q: With what types of fabric can you use FabricAide?
A: FabricAide can be used with any type of commercial fabric available on the market.
• Q: How can I treat my synthetic turf field with TurfAide?
A: There are various methods of applying TurfAide to synthetic turf fields. Treatments can come
as TurfAide OEM applications where the antimicrobial is applied at the factory or as topical
applications onto the field.
• Q: Can I apply TurfAide myself?
A: Self-application depends on the TurfAide treatment being applied. The long-lasting
treatments of TurfAide 2 and TurfAide 4 must be applied by CSG certified applicators due to
EPA regulations. However, the entry level maintenance program of TurfD involves training of a
local field manager on the proper application technique so that subsequent applications may be
self-applied.

PURETi™ Green Tech Plays Key Role in Environmental & human health Issues
• A laboratory study conducted by renowned environmental engineering expert Professor
Alexander Orlov, Stony Brook University, revealed that coating a surface with PURETi will
reduce the presence of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the air by almost 80%.
• Dr. Orlov received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cambridge University. Dr. Orlov is an Assistant
Professor in the Materials Science & Engineering Department at Stony Brook University in New
York. He also works as an advisor to the British government on nanotechnology and public policy.
• NOx emissions is ground level ozone, which causes damage to human lung tissue and lung
function.
• According to the EPA, roughly one out of every three people in the United States is at a higher
risk of experiencing ozone-related health effects.
• Aside from breaking-down harmful air pollution, such as NOx, PURETi transforms surfaces into
self-cleaning materials that need to be cleaned half has often.
• When using PURETi, the water, energy, and harmful chemicals used in normal cleaning
maintenance of windows, building facades, cement, and metal is reduced by at least 50%.
• Product line currently consists of 3 products: PURETi Clear (for glass), PURETi Clean (for all
non-glass surfaces) PURETi Fresh (for fabrics).
• When used indoors, PURETi can break down air pollutants tied to Sick Building Syndrome,
including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by fumes from cleaning chemicals and
formaldehyde from new office furniture and equipment.
• PURETi products are registered with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), certified
by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and have the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS)
Indoor Advantage Gold certification.
• PURETi’s SCS certification makes it an Environmentally Preferable Product and point worthy in
the LEED program of the U.S. Green Building Council.

33. III PURETi TECHNOLOGY
Understanding PURETi Core Technology: Ultra Violet Photocatalysis (UV-PCO)
Photosynthesis is the natural process of light energy hitting plants and triggering the creation of
organic matter. Plants combine light energy from the sun, hydrogen from water, carbon dioxide and
nitrogen from ground fertilizer to create the organic molecules of life.
Photocatalysis is the opposite of photosynthesis. It is a natural process whereby light energy
hits a mineral and triggers a chemical process that results in the breakdown or decomposition of
organic matter. UV-PCO (ultra violet photocatalysis) is a technology that accelerates the natural
decomposition of organic matter. By definition, photocatalysis is the acceleration of a photoreaction
in the presence of a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that accelerates or speeds up a chemical
reaction without being used up in that chemical reaction.
In UV-PCO, light energy from the sun or fluorescent
lamps energizes a mineral called anatase titanium
dioxide (TiO2) and the natural chemical breakdown
of organic molecules such as grime, bio-film, and
VOCs is accelerated. The TIO2 is not used up in
the process, so the UV-PCO process can continue
to breakdown organic molecules over-and-over
again until only harmless gas remains.
There are four basic components that must be present in order for UV-PCO to proactively and
continuously break-down organic matter: TiO2, light, water vapor (always present in the air as
humidity), and air flow. When light energy from either the sun or artificial fluorescent light hits a
PURETi treated substrate, the photocatalytic process is activated and passing water molecules
are turned into hydroxyl radicals.
The hydroxyl radical is one of the most powerful scrubbing agents in nature. It is two-to-three
times stronger than 100% chlorine in its oxidative power or ability to break up organic molecules.
The hydroxyl radicals generated in the PURETi photocatalytic process continually attack and
break up all organic molecules in its proximity. Organic molecules, whether they are part of grime,
bio-film, oils, or VOCs, get oxidized or burned up turning into water and carbon dioxide. This
process occurs in a billionth of a second and continues as long as light, humidity, PURETi and
air flow are present.

34. III PURETi TECHNOLOGY continued
PURETi UV-PCO technology is the world’s most advanced. The discovery of UV-PCO technology
over thirty years ago has resulted in 6,000 patents and 12 global conferences on the use of
photocatalytic TiO2 to treat air and water pollution. While 99.9% of all the patents, academic
research, and commercial activity related to UV-PCO are categorized as the dry process or
generation 1 UV-PCO, PURETi is the only advanced wet process or third generation UV-PCO
technology available.
CSG’s PURETi UV-PCO technology is supported by 3 owned U.S. Patents and legal rights to an
additional 10 patents. PURETi UV-PCO technology is commercialized under three main products:
PURETi Clear specially developed for windows, solar panels, LED screens and
polycarbonate surfaces.
PURETi Clean which forms a durable, ultra-thin invisible film that oxidizes organic particles
creating self-cleaning surfaces on buildings and facades.
PURETi Fresh specifically developed for textiles and fabrics to promote odor elimination.
