1. Enteral Feeding
Enteral tube feeding is a method of maintaining or improving
nutritional status in patients unable to take sufficient nutrition
orally
Enteral Nutrition is preferred over parenteral
nutrition because it is safer for the patient and
has shown less risk of infection
Enteral feeding products are supplied in ready
to hang (RTH) bottles
Feeding tubes require routine flushing of water
to maintain tube patency and provide
adequate hydration
2. Enteral Feeding (continued)
The RTH bottles are used with the Kendall
Proximal Spike Pump Set with 1000 ml Flush Bag
Tubing and supplemental feeding products are
changed q 24 hours
• If feeding set is disconnected from feeding tube for a prolonged
time, cover adapter with provided adapter cover to reduce risk of
touch contamination
• Bolus feedings and flushes may be programmed through the
Kangaroo ePump
• Check residual every 4-6 hours when continuous feedings are in
use
• Residual volumes in excess of 200 mls will be discarded and
concern for the intolerance of feedings will be reported to the MD
3. Enteral Feeding (continued)
If unable to use the RTH bottles,
cans may be used
The cans are used with the Kendall
1000ml pump set with 1000ml flush
bag
Only pour enough feeding into bag
to last 8 hours
Tubing is changed every 24 hours
4. Enteral Feeding (continued)
Kangaroo ePump may be programmed for
continuous or intermittent feedings

main selection screen and select Intermittent
