“Doubt ... In a Life of Faith”
John 20:19-31
Thomas has often been called the “Doubting Thomas”,
but perhaps he might be more appropriately called the
“Absent Thomas”…
John 20:19-21
It was still the first day of the week. That evening, while the disciples
were behind closed doors because they were afraid of the Jewish
authorities, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “Peace be
with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. Jesus said
to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am
sending you.”
Jesus’ mere presence transformed the disciples from men filled
with doubt and fear… …to believers filled with joy, peace, and
hope!!
2. John 20:24-25
Thomas, the one called Didymus, one of the Twelve, wasn’t with the
disciples when Jesus came. The other disciples told him, “We’ve seen
the Lord!” But he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands,
put my finger in the wounds left by the nails, and put my hand into
his side, I won’t believe.”
Fellowship with other believers helps strengthen our faith!
John 20:26-27
After eight days his disciples were again in a house and Thomas was
with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus entered and
stood among them. He said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to
Thomas, “Put your finger here. Look at my hands. Put your hand into
my side. No more disbelief. Believe!”
Jesus loved Thomas so much and He met him right at his point of
weakness.
John 20:28
Thomas responded to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”
When Thomas saw and heard Jesus, he was the first recorded
witness after the resurrection to confess Jesus as his LORD and his
GOD!!
John 20:29
Jesus replied, “Do you believe because you see me? Happy are
those who don’t see and yet believe.”
True belief doesn’t just acknowledge the resurrection of Jesus ---
true belief involves making a personal decision to believe and
follow Jesus.
For Personal or Group Reflection
1. Why do you think Thomas was not with the other disciples on Easter
night when Jesus appeared to them in the Upper Room?
2. Why do you think Jesus waited a week to appear to Thomas?
3. How did He deal with Thomas? Think of times when you’ve had
spiritual doubts. Describe the circumstances.
4. What kind of “spiritual proof” did you need? What have you found
helpful in times of doubt? What “evidence of life” have you seen as a
result of your faith in Jesus?
5. If you could ask God one question about your own faith, what
would It be?

4. Viewpoints on the Psalms
New Open Door Class
Begins Sunday, April 12
9:00 AM
Who wrote the Psalms and how did the historical situation effect their
writing? How does our understanding of Hebrew poetry influence our
interpretation of the Psalms? How were these songs originally used in
worship? Do they speak to us about Jesus Christ? These questions, and
more, will be discussed as we spend 13 weeks looking at the Book of
Psalms through the lenses of history, literature, and theology.
Written and led by Stan Watkins, this study will provide an opportunity
to look at the Psalms from a new perspective. You already own the
book we will use to study the Psalms––the Bible! Stan will also provide
notes to accompany each week’s lesson.
Please join us in Room 11 at 9 am on April 12!
