  • Rafael, Niels, Todd - thanks very much for your comments. You're correct, 'penetration' figures in excess of 100% are technically not possible, but we've opted to report the numbers in this way to allow easier comparison of mobile usage between countries with different population sizes. The 'penetration' terminology isn't perfect, but hopefully you'll still find the raw numbers useful. Also, if you do need unique user numbers (and actual penetration figures), that data is available from http://gsmaintelligence.com [note that this data requires a paid subscription though]. Thanks again for sharing your feedback - we appreciate it.

  • Hello Rachel, good question! The US Census Bureau actually provide consistent population data for almost every country in the world, which is why we use their numbers for all our reports. Hope that clarifies :-)

  • Regarding citing your data sources, a few slides reference the US Census Bureau even though they supposedly contain just European data. Slide 16 for example. Is this an error in the footer?

  • Here's an article that cited this slide deck:

If anyone is going to have a reason to push this 'mobile is everything' agenda, it's them.

  • Yeah these guys seem to be making all kinds of wildly unfounded, honestly laughable claims. As Niels and Rafael already pointed out, you simply cannot have a penetration rate greater than 100%. Even if every person in the survey had 3 phones, that's still 100%. You don't count the person 1 time and each phone individually.

The really laughable thing is trying to claim that South America has a penetration rate of 124%. Do they realize that there are Amazon tribes in the middle of the rain forests of Brazil that have barely had any contact with civilization, ever? Are these people counted in the survey, or did we simply take a random sample of the 5-10 people who walked past at 5PM in the middle of a busy intersection in the capital city of each country. How can 6.5 billion of the world's 7 billion people have a mobile device? I guess we're so progressive now that we're sticking a Samsung Galaxy in a baby's hand the moment they're delivered from the womb?

You don't even need to study these metrics to know that they're wildly inaccurate, and consistently OVER estimated. This company obviously has an agenda to convince everyone that mobile is absolutely everything and that nothing else matters anymore, and it simply isn't true.
