- As customer needs grow, PEM allows end users to purchase additional services or migrate to higher end hosting plans directly from the customer control panel. Customers can upgrade their service from basic shared hosting to ecommerce to VPS (virtual private server) to dedicated hosting. Customers can also add applications or resources to their existing plan. PEM enables service providers to customize all offerings to the exact needs of their customers. Providers can decide which applications to include in basic plans and which applications cost extra. Providers can impose resource quotas and specify “overage” charges. PEM helps service providers retain customers and increase the revenue per customers by allowing them to purchase new services directly from the control panel without waiting for return phone calls or service provisioning delays.
- PEM provides a customizable hierarchy which can accommodate resellers and sub-resellers. At each level services, resources, and capabilities can be allocated to lower levels within the hierarchy. For example, a reseller can dictate which service plans can be distributed by sub-resellers. Both service providers and resellers can determine which capabilities are available to customers who purchase specific service plans. This means that PEM can support current business models, yet remain flexible enough to change as new services and new resellers are introduced. PEM provides three layers of management screens – one for the service provider, one for resellers, and one for end users. Each screen can be customized so the appropriate level of control is provided. The service provider can determine which tasks to automate and which tasks to perform manually. For example, one service provider may want customers to be able to order, pay for, and manage additional email accounts using the customer control panel. But, another provider may want the customer to have to manually contact them before installing new mail services (in order to screen for spammers, etc.).
