Luke 7:31-35
John (no reference)
Matt 11
16 But whereuntoshall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting
in the markets, and callingunto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have
mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
Luke 7:31-32 31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the
men of this generation? andto what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sittingin the marketplace, and calling
one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have
not danced; we have mournedto you, and ye have not wept.
Whereunto shall I liken.
Lam 2:13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I
liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? whatshall I equal to thee, that I
may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like
the sea: who can heal thee?
Mark 4:30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or
with what comparison shall we compare it?
Luke 13:18 Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and
whereuntoshall I resemble it?
This generation.
Zech 8:5 And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playingin
the streets thereof.
Matt 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good
things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Matt 23:36 VerilyI say unto you, All these things shall come upon this
generation.
2. Matt 24:34 VerilyI say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all
these things be fulfilled.

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a
devil.

drinkingwine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

gluttonous, and a winebibber,a friend of publicans and sinners. But
wisdom is justifiedof her children.
Luke 7:34-35 34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and
ye say, Behold a gluttonousman, and a winebibber,a friend of
publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicansand
sinners. 13 words, the worlds wisdom is rebellion againstGod.
Prov 23:4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
1Cor 1:19-23 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and will bring to nothing the understandingof the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this
world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the worldby wisdom knew not God,
it pleased God by the foolishness of preachingto save them that believe.
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
23 But we preach Christcrucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and
unto the Greeks foolishness;
3. True Wisdom
1Cor 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us
wisdom, and righteousness, andsanctification, andredemption:
Exod 31:3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in
understanding, andin knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
Deut 4:4-6 4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive
every one of you this day.
5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD
my God commanded me, that ye shoulddo so in the land whither ye go to
possess it.
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your
understandingin the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these
statutes, and say, Surelythis great nation is a wise and understanding
people.
1Kgs 3:28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had
judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God
was in him, to do judgment.
1Kgs 4:29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding
much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginningof knowledge: but fools
despise wisdom and instruction.
Prov 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with
all thy getting get understanding.
Prov 5:1 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my
understanding:
Prov 8:1 Doth not wisdom cry? and understandingput forth her voice?
Luke 7:29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified
God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
1. That questions of truth are not questions to be decided by
vote.— the men of their own generation thought the teaching of
both John and Jesus to be utterly wrong. these same men were
utterly in the wrong in so doing.
4. 2. That questions of truth may be decided by the testimony of
facts.—As a matter of fact, to what did the severity of John bring
men in the end? To repentance and Jesus (see Mat. 3:5-6; Joh.
1:29, seq.). As a matter of fact to what did the abounding mercy of
Jesus bring men in the end? To forgiveness and renewal; to
deliverance from both the guilt and the bondage of sin (Act. 3:26;
Rom. 8:1-4, etc.). So by these their “works” did both these
“children” of “wisdom” justify their claim.
The counterfeit wisdom:
1) Ezek 28:4 With thy wisdom and with thine understandingthou
hast gotten thee riches, and hast gotten gold and silver into thy
treasures:
2) Ezek 28:5 By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou
increasedthy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy
riches:
3) Ezek 28:7 Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee,
the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords
againstthe beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy
brightness.
4) Ezek 28:12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of
Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest
up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
5) Ezek 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty,
thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I
will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that
they may beholdthee.
5 “I will” of satan:
Isa 14:13-14 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will 1)
ascendinto
heaven, I will2)
exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will 3)
sit also
upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
5. 14 I will4)
ascendabove the heights of the clouds; I will 5)
be like the
most High.
5 step fall:
1) From anointed cherub (in third heaven) to leviathan (in 2nd
heaven)
Gen 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon
the face of the deep. And the Spiritof God moved upon the face of the
waters.
Job 26:13 By his spirit he hath garnishedthe heavens; his handhath
formed the crooked serpent.
Job 41:1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a
cord which thou lettest down?
2) From 2nd
heaven to prince of the power of the air (during ministry of
Jesus)
Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightningfall from
heaven.
Eph 2:1-3 1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and
sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked accordingto the course of this world,
accordingto the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh
in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts
of our flesh, fulfillingthe desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by
nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Col 2:15 And havingspoiled principalities andpowers, he made a shew of
them openly, triumphingover them in it.
3) Michael will confine him to earth in the Trib.
Matt 24:29 Immediatelyafter the tribulation of those days shall the sun be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall
from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Mark 13:25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in
heaven shall be shaken.
6. 1Pet 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversarythe devil, as a
roaringlion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Rev 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did
cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was
ready to be delivered, for to devour her childas soon as it was born.
Rev 12:7-17 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels
fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailednot; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, calledthe Devil, and
Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and
his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice sayingin heaven, Now is come salvation, and
strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the
accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accusedthem before our God
day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of
their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the
inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you,
havinggreat wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he
persecutedthe woman which brought forth the man child.
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she
might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourishedfor a
time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman,
that he might cause her to be carriedawayof the flood.
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and
swallowedup the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with
the remnantof her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have
the testimony of Jesus Christ.
7. 4) Jesus will cast Satan into the bottomlesspit at the end of Trib.
Rev 20:1-3 1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key
of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and
Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal
upon him, that he shoulddeceive the nations no more, till the thousand
years shouldbe fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
5) Final judgment at the end of the Mil.
Rev 20:7-10 7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be
loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of
the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number
of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp
of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out
of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceivedthem was cast into the lake of fire and
brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be
tormented day and night for ever and ever.
