Puppies spend most of their time chewing, investigating and playing with objects.
All these activities involve the use of their mouths and needle-sharp teeth. When
they play with people, they often bite, chew, and mouth people's hands, clothing
and limbs it is necessary for one to help his or her puppy learn how to curb his
mouthy behavior. In order to do this, there are various ways or techniques, some of
which are better than the others to teach this lesson. The most important thing is to
teach him that human beings have very sensitive skin and so he must be very
gentle when using his mouth.
2. 1.MOUTHING PUPPY
Many pups find it interesting to 'mouth' as they grow up. There are various
reasons why they do this with the major one being out of sheer fun. Though
mouthing is different from biting, many pups develop the unbecoming
behavior of biting after a period of mouthing. Ensure that your pup knows
the limits so that he does not bite as he puts his mouth all over you. You can
also encourage him not to do this as sometimes it is unhygienic or even
uncouth especially when you have visitors. It is also risky to the pup. Do not
give up if he does not seem to drop the behavior easily, since this is a trend
that will end with time.
3. 2.CONSISTENCY
When playing, the puppy might bite you. When it does, always say "no" in a
steady voice. This will drive a signal to him and if not, walk away ignoring
him. The next time he does so, say no with more convection and this will
give him a message that it is not good to bite. With time and application of
other methods, the biting will fade away.

4. 3.TALKING TO YOUR PUPPY
Always communicate with your puppy as you train him not to bite. You
should do this by attaching emotional sentiments to your words to
communicate various moods and feelings. When you are happy, say "that is
awesome" or "good" and then way you say it drives the point home. When
you are disappointed, you could say "you can do better". However, don't be
too wordy as you might leave your pup confused or even irritate him.
Remember to exercise Patience and moderation.
5. 4.PLAYING
When playing with your puppy, always play gently because when you play
roughly this may trigger the puppy to bite. Always play games such as tug-of-war,
hide and seek, mind games and tricks. A tug-of-war game teaches the puppy to
uphold release commands.
6. 5.BEHAVIOR
When you begin teaching your puppy, always start with the easiest
commands like sit, look etc. Gradually introduce complicated and new
commands such as lie and if it does so for even a second, he should be
praised. Continued training increases the duration at which it does a
command, so, if last time it lied for one second then the next time make him
try for three to four seconds Always start teaching your puppy a new
command in free distraction environment such as home or yard. This enables
the puppy to concentrate on what you say or command him to do. As you
continue training him, increase the level of distraction for instance bouncing
ball, singing a song, squeaking a toy and throwing treats around him.
Increase the distance between you and the pup cumulatively in the course of
the training.
7. 6.PRAISE
It is always pleasant to have someone congratulate you on a great
achievement. This applies to dogs as well as it applies to human beings. Be
as kind as to chant happily the words "good boy" or "well done" to your pup
every time he succeeds in learning something. Praising your pup improves
its reception of your training procedure as well as its rating of you. This
means you become closer friends and there is a high chance that it will work
extra hard to please you always. This means that your training receives the
much needed boost as the pup will shy away from inflicting pain on you or
someone else by biting. A soothing rub on his body or a smooth tap on his
head will also serve to congratulate and praise him. Put no limit in the extent
and ways of praising your pup. In fact, you should have fun finding out what
he likes for a "thanks buddy, you are doing great"
8. 7.PROFFESSIONAL ADVICE
Sometimes it may become necessary to employ the services of a
professional dog trainer. Professional trainers have a library of information
on how to condition your puppy so that you can do it efficiently and
effectively. They will advise you on various methods to apply as you train
your pup to stop biting. This may prove helpful as you will have an easy
time reaching out for methods appropriate to your puppy species as opposed
to general methods that may not always work for you and your little friend.
Remember the aim here is to do the training in the most friendly but realistic
way so that you emerge triumphant and you achieve in getting closer to your
pup. Look for a professional who is most convenient to you in terms of
geographical location and charges. He or she should also be knowledgeable
of your circumstances and in that case you can obtain maximum benefits.
Remember not to hand over your pup to strangers for the training as this
may affect his progress since he may feel insecure or even uncomfortable
with a stranger especially if you have decided to execute the task single-
handed.
9. 8.BUTTER
Despite all the steps that we have looked at above, you are still not 100%
guaranteed that your tiny puppy will not transform into a vicious German
shepherd. It is what you give your puppy that determines whether it bites or
not.
That stick of butter that you normally apply on your toast in the morning can
be a remedy to this problem. You can opt to place some little butter on your
palm and have the puppy lick it from your hand. This tends to teach the
puppy to lick rather than to bite.
