My presentation on the possible use of the web as a tool for learning
In particular, my presentation will be focusing on the not-for-profit organization, khanacademy.org. This website has proven to be a very possible successor to our educational system as we know it right now. Here’s just some background information on the creator of Khanacademy.
Khan Academy was formed as a result of Salman Khan.In 2004, he used YouTube to uploaded tutoring videos for his cousins. His videos gained much positive feedback from his family as well as others who sought maths tutorials online. Following about 5 years of uploading videos, and a huge amount of positive feedback, he quit his job and focused full-time on making videos and improving the learning environment on khanacademy.org
Here’s a couple of screenshots of khanacademy.org. As you can see there is a personal profile facility, which is very handy for keeping track for the amount of videos you’ve watched. The Jump to topic, menu follows you around the site and allows quick and easy access to all of the subjects thought on KhanAcademy.
Here’s a look at a few of the tutorials offered on Khanacademy. It ranges from basic addition, which is the first topic on the maths course, to more difficult sections, such as surface integral. Khanacademy also offers tutorials in many other subjects, physics and computer science the other two videos shown here.
Another very important and very useful tool of KhanAcademy is the ability to track students progress. As a teacher, or coach, one can track the whole class’s progress, seeing where they’re struggling and even focus on individual students to see where difficulties in certain topics are arising.
Here’s just a few facts on KhanAcademy as of last the last month. The site, boasts over 3000 videos. That amounts to over 125 million unique views of the videos available on KhanAcademy, which is over 200,000 per day. It also boasts an ever expanding assessment area which can be used for continuous assessment.
And as of the beginning of this year, the site gets 4 million unique visitors per month, compared to 3 million in January 2011.
So how can KhanAcademy really help the education system? Well today, teachers are not being used to their full potential. Because of large class sizes and the lack of one to one time, students, who have different speeds of learning are given a one size fits all lecture from the teacher. This leaves behind the slower students and may not keep the interest of the students who learn quicker. On top of that, a lot of teachers time is spent doing administerive work rather than actually getting one to one time with students.
And How exactly can Khanacademy help this?
It helps students for one. Khanacademy is extremely useful in that students can pause the video tutorial, rewind it and rewatch it to ensure total understanding of the topic. They can do this without the embarrassment of asking a teacher to re-do an example or go back on something. And most importantly the student can carry on at his or her own pace.
And it also helps the education system. It gets rid of a lot of administrive work from the teachers, with automated assessments and tests, the teacher can focus a lot more time on helping students get their heads around difficult concepts. Also the set-up is very useful, as it is web based and free, it is available to almost anybody.
And the data available to teachers is absolutely invaluable. They can now see how the class is coping with new sections and see where further tutoring is required, rather than having to wait until the end of year tests. The teachers, can use this information to tweak their schedule as to not focus to much time on topics which the students are finding easy.
So what are the next steps for Khanacademy? Peer-to-peer tutoring, is an initiative to get students to help each other out where one student helps a student who is struggling in return for rewards, or being tutored or a subject themselves. KA also intends to distribute DVD’s or usb sticks with tutorials for students with no internet access. Math camps for testing out KA in a school environment and also dubbing the videos into a wider variety of languages
Khanacadey is currently being trialled in a number of Californian schools. The feedback has been very good so far with a national interest in how this might shape the future of the education system. A number of national TV channels have done reports on the progress of the schools.
Khanacademy is alwas interested in growing. This is a screenshot of some of the jobs being offered by khanacademy and also a volunteering section which mostly consists of dubbing videos into other languages.
