It is best to keep your profile information to a minimum and never share information like your address, mobile number or the school you go to • If people are rude in an online game, you can mute them. If they persistently harass you or show other inappropriate behaviour, like asking for your login details, report them to the gaming website or network directly using the website’s own ‘Report Abuse’ facility. It is also good to let a trusted adult know • Sites like Twitter allow you to follow the conversation (‘tweets’) of people you find interesting. Similarly other people can follow your ‘tweets’. Be aware that unless your profile is private, your ‘tweets’ are visible to others (for e.g. in a search), even if they do not follow you • If you have a specific interest/hobby/project, you can set up a blog or YouTube channel to share this, as well as link to and comment on similar content by others. Always be polite, as it is easy to be misunderstood online. Get permission before uploading videos/photos of your friends. It is also possible to make your blog site/videos on your YouTube channel private. Similarly, it is possible to moderate comments with both these services, by customising your preferences • Take regular breaks from online activities to do some sports or hang out with your friends, and always log out after playing a game or using a service like Twitter or YouTube. This stops others from misusing your identity The Internet is great for publicly connecting people worldwide on forums, online games (using the Xbox, or PS3 for example), YouTube channels, blogs, or via public conversation spaces on Twitter, for example. Used well, these services can help you share your expertise and build a positive online presence. Some of these services however, can be misused by Internet trolls and pranksters, so keep the following in mind:
