DESCRIPTION OF PRACTICE (TECHNIQUE / SKILL)
Defending In The Modern Game 1 v 1
A Practice to help the player improve their technique in basic defending – stop turning
This practice emphasizes the value of marking tightly and stopping forward play
ORGANISATION
Players play in a 15 x 12 metre grid
With two 5 metre end zones
1. Three Reds pass ball between
them in end zone, as do 3 yellows
2. On Coaches signal one of reds
leaves area to receive a pass from 2
red end zone players
3. . One of two red Servers in End
Zone plays a pass into central
receiver
4. As soon as red moves out, nearest
yellow gets out fast to close down
5. Yellow tries to stop red receiver
turning – keep them facing own goal
KEY OBSERVATION
1. Nearest Defender React - as soon as possible. React. Get out fast – Brakes!!
2. Prevent player turning - get tight – not too tight – Get defenders head down
3. Patience – Keep discipline – stay on feet – don’t dive in
4. Pressure – Keep pressure on – don’t let “off hook” – get low down - jockey
5. See the Ball – Ensure defenders position allows them to always see ball
6. Force play – Force receiver to play back to Server – dictate the play
NOTES
Make practice match like – 2 groups in zone keeping possession – then a game practice
Coach can dictate practice by names, numbers OR players can dictate by their movement
Show players jockey and delay techniques – low down
