2. Narrative Paradigm- Walter Fisher Humanistic Grand Theory Theory in a Nutshell: Storytelling is a part of our everyday lives. Whether you believe the stories you hear is based on your own values.
3. Narrative Paradigm In 1978 Fisher introduced the concept of good reasons, which lead to his proposal of the narrative paradigm in 1984. Proposal: offering good reasons has more to do with telling a compelling story than it does with piling up evidence or constructing a tight argument. Fisher regards almost all types of communication as story.
5. Fun Facts For every story told there has to be reasoning behind it to make it believable. Values are based on beliefs you have developed over time. Watch the skit and answer the following questions! Why is this story a narrative paradigm? *********QUESTION ABOUT SKIT**********
6. Five Assumptions of Walter Fisher 1. People are essentially storytellers. 2. We make decisions on the basis of good reasons, which vary depending on the communication situation, media, and genre. 3. History, Biography, culture, and character determine what we consider good reasons. 4. Narrative rationality is determined by the coherence and fidelity of our stories. 5. The world is a set of stories from which we choose, and thus constantly re-create, our lives.
7. Narrative Rationality Narrative Coherence: Does the Story Hang Together? Deals with how probable the story sounds to the hearer. Does the narrative hang together? Do the people & events it portrays seem to be of one piece? Are they part of an organic whole? Do the characters act consistently? When we are convinced the narrator hasn’t left out details, fudged the facts, or ignored plausible interpretations.
8. Narrative Rationality Cont. Narrative Fidelity: Does the Story Ring True & Humane Quality of a story that causes the words to strike a responsive chord in the listener. When a story squares with stories they might tell about themselves. Provides good reasons to guide our future actions. Opening ourselves up to the possibility that those values will influence our beliefs and actions.
9. Vocabulary!! Narrative Paradigm- a theoretical framework that views narrative as a basis of all human communication. Narrative rationality- a way to evaluate the worth of stories based on the twin standards of narrative coherence and fidelity. Narrative coherence-internal consistency with characters acting in a reliable fashion; the story holds together. Narrative Fidelity- congruence between values embedded in a message and what listeners regard as truthful and humane; the story strikes a responsive chord.
