The life of a knowledge worker is ever-changing: interacting with different tasks and projects, communicating with different colleagues, and generating and consuming different information on a daily basis. (the challenge for knowledge workers & business) The challenge for knowledge workers is keeping up with the changing face and changing pace of knowledge work. The modern workplace is intimately connected and dependent on interactions with co-workers, business partners, and customers. Knowledge workers must communicate with a broad range of colleagues, partners, and vendors frequently over long distances and across time zones. With busy schedules and increased responsibilities, windows of opportunity for communications between knowledge workers are often scarce. Knowledge workers are spending more time at work because of the availability of technology (e-mail/Internet) and feel overloaded with information. Technology is pervasive in knowledge work. As technology sets out to solve or improve a situation, it often creates a boundary as distributed colleagues may have entirely different infrastructures, resulting in delays due to firewall issues, format, or operating system differences. You can add these statistics to reinforce (all data points from KW Harris Poll 2007, USA specific) Today’s knowledge worker works from his/her office (95%) but also works from home (39%), a different company site (16%) or partner/customer site (10%) at least once every 2 weeks – how well are you able to support this new “mobile” workforce? (KW Harris Poll 2007) 60% of knowledge workers say they are at least somewhat overloaded with information during a typical work day (KW Harris Poll 2007) Email is the most frequently used form of communication for collaboration. 54% of you experience challenges exchanging email with attachments due to file size and format incompatibility. 40% of you have challenges maintaining version control Over half of knowledge workers work on more than one project team at a time 85% of knowledge workers are required by their companies to keep documents and files confidential.
