Food riots in Petrograd in March 1917 turned into political protests against Tsar Nicholas II as food was being sent to World War I fronts. The riots led the Tsar to abdicate and a provisional government was formed, but two main powers vied for control - the Duma and the Petrograd Soviet workers' council. In November 1917 the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, overthrew the provisional government after winning a majority in the Soviets, establishing the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic with Lenin as its leader.
