- 5. Baldrige Stock Index
This year, 2004, will be the final year for the Baldrige Stock
Study. The Baldrige Program has decided to discontinue
the study because it no longer accurately reflects the
results, accomplishments, and diversity of the Baldrige
Award recipients and site-visited organizations. In recent
years, particularly since the addition of the health care and
education eligibility categories, there has been an increase
in the number of Baldrige Award recipients that are either
nonprofit or privately owned businesses. In fact, for the
past 5 years (2000-2004) only 4 of the 23 Baldrige Award
recipients were publicly traded, U.S.-owned organizations
and could be included in the stock study. BNQP is currently
researching alternatives to the stock study and hopes to
replace it with an index that better reflects the
performance of all recent Award recipients.

ขางตน
แนวทางในการระบุองคกรที่มีความเปนเลิศที่แตกตางกัน (และความนาเชื่อถือ)
‘For what it’s worth, okay, I confess: We faked the data’ – Tom Peters in Fast Company
‘We went around to McKinsey’s partners and to a bunch of other smart people who were
deeply involved and seriously engaged in the world of business and asked, Who’s cool?
Who’s doing cool work? Where is there great stuff going on? And which companies
genuinely get it?’
This approach generated a list of 62 companies which led to interviews with people at those
companies.
Come up with some quantitative measures of performance. Those measures dropped the list
from 62 to 43 companies. GE was on the list of 62 companies but didn’t make the cut to 43 –
which shows you how “stupid” raw insight is and how “smart” tough-minded metrics can be.

Built to Last –
Companies that had risen to ironic stature and held it for five, ten, or 15 decades
Surveyed ‘a carefully selected sample of CEOs from large and small companies’
• Firms that are widely admired by their peers and having long track record of making
significant impact on the world around them
• CEO focus group didn’t ignore financial results in their nominations
Put iconic company up against an also-ran that, at some point, held equal stature
in the same industry.
• Studied how the two diverged from that point on and then looked for patterns across all the
winners

Fortune’s Most Admired Companies
Corporate Reputation
The winners were chosen from the 1,000 largest U.S. companies
(ranked by revenue) and the 25 largest U.S. subsidiaries of foreign-
owned companies
These companies were sorted by industry and then selected the 10
largest companies in each industry to constitute 65 separate groups
To create the top 10 list, the Hay Group asked 10,000 executives,
directors, and securities analysts to select the ten companies they
admired most, regardless of industry
The Hay Group asked the executives, directors, and analysts to rate
companies in their own industry on eight criteria, ranking from long-
term investment value to social responsibility.
1) Innovation 2) Use of Assets 3) Employee Talent 4) Management
5) Investment Value 6) Social Responsibility 7) Financial Soundness

- 46. ความสําคัญของ Strategic Implementation and
Execution
Executives no longer believe that a strategy –
consolidation, transformation – is enough.
‘We’ve made the right strategic decision, but my organization
isn’t motivated or setup right to get on with it’
‘Everyone says they understand the vision, but the businesses
and functions just aren’t working together to get results’
Era of Execution
The revival of IBM wasn’t due to vision ‘Fixing IBM, was all
about execution’ – Lou V. Gerstner

- 49. Great Strategy?
Different assumptions about strategy
Less successful firms: staying ahead of
competition
• Focusing on matching and beating their rivals
• Strategies tend to converge along the same basic
dimension of competition
• Competing on the basis of incremental improvements
in cost or quality or both
High-growth firms: paid little attention to beating
rivals, sought to make competitors irrelevant
through strategic innovation

Brilliant execution is much “I could leave our strategies
more important than brilliant plan on the plane and it
strategy. wouldn’t make any
difference. No one could
execute. Our success has
Focus on getting every detail nothing to do with planning.
right every single day It has to do with execution.”
