Give students  plenty of opportunity  to learn  from each other
Step 1: Find classrooms with the most whiteboards, and take them over.
Step 1.5:  Make friends with your custodial staff. They can tell you when there are “orphaned” whiteboards sitting in storage.  (brownies?)

Step 2:  Decide, with the help of your colleagues, how to optimally redesign these classroom spaces.

Step 3:  Submit a carefully supported budget request.  Justify everything you need.  Include pictures (old and new).
Alternate Step 3:  Begin scouring campus for abandoned tables and unused technology that you can move to YOUR room.
Step 4:  Carefully (and nicely) go to pitch your plan to every influencer in the budget process. Show them the pictures. Be impassioned.
Step 5:  If none of this works, make sure to point out just how little your department has asked for in the past. Active learning requires different classroom spaces.  Traditional classrooms FORCE lecturing.
Eventually … A miracle occurs! Ta da!

  • 3. Step 1: Find classrooms with the most whiteboards, and take them over.
  • 4. Step 1.5: Make friends with your custodial staff. They can tell you when there are “orphaned” whiteboards sitting in storage. (brownies?)

  • 11. Step 2: Decide, with the help of your colleagues, how to optimally redesign these classroom spaces.
  • 13. Step 3: Submit a carefully supported budget request. Justify everything you need. Include pictures (old and new).
  • 14. Alternate Step 3: Begin scouring campus for abandoned tables and unused technology that you can move to YOUR room.
  • 15. Step 4: Carefully (and nicely) go to pitch your plan to every influencer in the budget process. Show them the pictures. Be impassioned.
  • 16. Step 5: If none of this works, make sure to point out just how little your department has asked for in the past. Active learning requires different classroom spaces. Traditional classrooms FORCE lecturing.
  • 17. Eventually … A miracle occurs! Ta da!
