More than any other Ancient Civilization, Rome was characterized by a long stretch of relative stability in
which power passed from one imperial leader to another in (mostly) peaceful succession. Beginning with
Augustus in 27 BC, these Roman Emperors wielded extraordinary power and the fate of the Empire was
directly linked to the decision-making, temperament, and vision of each successive ruler. Some were
noble and brave, others cowardly and perverse-but each possessed unquestioned authority and
extraordinary power.
Each group has been assigned 1 Emperor to study. I would like you to address the following
categories in a short presentation (pre-recorded video or power-point) of approximately10
minutes. Be sure to answer each question for full credit. Make sure to include pictures and maps
for each point.
A. History and Noteable events
1. How did the leader come to power?
2. Describe conflicts or wars that occurred during their reign.
3. What was the general state of Empire during their reign and did anything unusual occur?
B. Personality and Style of Rule
1. What was the personality and temperament of this leader?
2. Did they possess any eccentric traits? If so please describe.

C. Art
Please present a sculptural portrait of each ruler and describe the artistic conventions that are evident
in your example.
1. What does the bust communicate in terms of propagandistic ideas about the ruler? His
accomplishments, personality?
2. Is idealism preferred or verism? A combination of the two?
D. Architecture and Engineering
1. Describe the major architectural/engineering accomplishments of each ruler-are there any lasting
monuments that were built during their reign (Columns, arches, aqueducts, stadiums, baths,
temples, etc)?
E. Evaluation
1. What was the impact and legacy of this ruler, did they contribute to the expansion of empire, or
were they part of its rot and decay?
2. What is your evaluation of this ruler, positive, negative, or something in between and why?
