Elephants are very large land mammals that live in Africa and Asia. They can grow up to 4-5 meters tall and weigh 7-8 tonnes. Elephants have trunks and ivory tusks. They live in savannahs and jungles in herds and are highly intelligent. Elephants are endangered due to habitat loss, ivory demand, and illegal poaching. An estimated 96 elephants per day are killed in Africa, and elephant populations have decreased 62% in Central Africa in the last 10 years. Stricter laws, reducing ivory demand, and protecting elephant habitats are needed to conserve elephants from becoming locally extinct in the next 50 years.
