This occurs when ties with the colonial
rulers weaken and interethnic contacts
increase. Bilingual and multilingual
speakers create a new variety of
English, characterized by the transfer
of phonological and grammatical
features from the local language.
English is the dominant language

of print media, while broadcast
media such as TV and radio
stations shows a rapid expansion of
the domain of Filipino
-Dayag, 2004
PE is the language of educated Filipino.
It is the type of English that is
acceptable in educated Filipino circles
and it should therefore be distinguished
from creolized forms of English and
the type of English which simply
mixes Tagalog and English.
While American sounds and idioms have
become the norm for call centers and FM
radio, all other language based institution
have resisted the so called foreign sounds,
with some educators even considering the
standardization of Philippine English for
academic purposes.
To many teachers and learners of English a
dictionary is a definitive source of
information on the spelling, pronunciation,
grammatical category, and meaning of
words. What they have not considered is
the limited number and date coverage of
dictionaries available on the market.
Any new pronunciation, idiom, word,
usage, phrase structure or even spelling
generated by an adult especially the
one who is looked up to by the society
as a good exemplar of English gets
spread by diffusion.
Diffusion Model
 Generation
 Contact
 Transmission
 Acceptance
 Storage
English teacher were quite strict with
idiomatic/ grammatical construction
although they have very positive
attitudes towards PE as a variety and
gave their assent to statements such as “
It is to be accepted that there will be
regional differences in pronunciation
and vocabulary in PE.”
The lesson for ordinary classroom
teacher of English is to teach the
contrast that make a difference
between Philippine English and
the Standard American English.
Even if English teacher accepts
deviation in PE pronunciation
and lexicon form SAE, they
cannot afford to tolerate
grammatical mistakes.
Language teachers must alert their
students to the new meaning
being given to certain commonly
used words in Filipino context.
Why study Philippine English?
To satisfy our linguistic curiosity
To establish identity apart from other
Englishes of the world.
To get high value from multinationals
in a global competition
There is a need to revisit the Teaching of
language in the Philippines:
Teachers need to be retrained
Teaching materials need to be
developed
Instructional leadership needs to be
revised
Overall it is basically the context
of the situation which should
dictate us in knowing when to
use and how to use the
Philippine English
