Act1, S#1 : first visit
16
First time I visited india,
I my team had conventional thoughts that the good machines/techs must be good for them.
in short, we failed
we decide that we have to see the person not the technology.

Achieving primary education is one of the goal of UN’s MDGs
Millennium Development Goal
However, in rural areas,
Students has not been properly provided education materials.
In addition,
So, What can be a good products for the students in rural area?
Which feature has to be considered?
Is this problem can be solved by just delivering the ready-made products?
No. (we thought)
Because the circumstance or context is different between
rural area and the product-designed area(usually developed country).

The HCD toolkit provides
3 steps of research project in developing country site.
We cannot use whole process of this toolkit.
We pick and customize some methods.
!
In this process, we discussed with SHIS staffs
for making proper and feasible research plan.

The Need for the Desk
Design and Fabrication of the Desk
Field Research Methodology
in India, the gap between the rich and
the poor is a serious problem.
This research
based on here
Education is important in this situation
to overcome vicious cycle of poorness
and achieve human rights.
Education material is primary thing
for all kind of learning.
desk size is very important to students.
HCD toolkit was designed by IDEO,
intended to help devise solutions for
developing countries.
This method introduce several steps
which can be customized by researchers.
There are several factors to consider
for making appropriate desk.
: growth rate, price, gender, space,
posture, context, etc.

37. DRS2014A design Process based on Field Research, Jeong Young-chan, Seoul National University, Korea 35
Act 3, S#4 : Prototyping
A) foldable but lack of screen, using plastic materials
B) foldable and block able but too shaky
Prototype 1 Prototype 2
A) blockable, foldable but not adjustable
B) blockable, foldable but still shaky

Act 3, S#7 : Evaluation
1. still shaky depends on usage
2. need bigger size
!
and so on.
prototype is not perfect
there are still several problems.

Finale
44
1. Importance of field research
Don’t just buy go without research You could deliver useless things
You have to ‘design’ something
2. Localization is important
3. Customized design is important
have to use local materials and local skills for making sustainable, cheap product.
Don’t fix design concept depends on your opinion.
follow the user’s need (not just agenda, really do this)
lessons

45
And, not End The desk is not perfect, we keep developing this and other solutions
mobile probe apps
for participatory research
Another works to support this..
