Fold mountains are the most common type and are formed when tectonic plates collide and push rock layers upward, volcanic mountains form from eruptions that pile hardened magma on top of each other like Mount St. Helens, and plateau mountains start as flat areas that rise up or are layered with lava near fold mountains.
