THE PROBLEM
After the French and Indian War, the British was broke. They spent most of their
money in defending the American colonies. The British thought it was reasonable to tax
the American colonies so that they can make can have some money. In their mind,
since the colonies were protected from the French by the British Army, they would be
ok with paying taxes.
However, the colonists did not like paying taxes without having political
representation in the Parliament. The colonists asked permission to have taxes and
other laws be passed by the colonial legislature. Both the Parliament and King George
rejected their request.
The setting was set for confrontation. After an unsuccessful attempt at not
fighting, the American Colonists send King George the Declaration of Independence.

Many countries thought that the American Colonies stood no chance. The British Army
and Navy was considered on of the best in the world and the colonists were mostly
made up of farmers, traders and merchants. However, America proved to be lucky. After
the Battle of Saratoga, the French Government decided to help the American Colonists.
This was the important event that allowed the American Colonies to win the war and
become the United States of America.
