Educational facts on India
 India have the third largest higher education system in the world, behind China and the United
States.
 More than 630 universities, over 33000 affiliated colleges, 22000 professors and 1,69,74,883
students including 16,602 research students.
 The national annual budget for education is USD 10.30 billion.
 Commanding market force: India’s GDP is projected to surpass that of the US and Japan and be
second only to China by 2050.
 Growing budgets: The institutional market in India for journal subscriptions is estimated at $175
million and growing.
 Investment in R&D: In 2011, India pledged to double its R&D expenditures to 2% of GDP over the
next five years.
 New institutions: The Indian government has announced the building of some five dozen new
institutions of higher learning.
 New library consortia: Newly formed consortia are improving access to and increasing demand for
scholarly publications.
