Jainism teaches two karmas
◦ Ghati("destructive") affects the soul.
◦ Aghati ("non-destructive") affects the body.
There are four kinds of ghati karma:
◦ Knowledge obscuring karma (gyanavarniya): reverence to knowledge or a
teacher will shed this karma.
◦ Intuition obscuring karma (darshanavarniya): reverence to intuition or a teacher
will shed this karma.
◦ Obstacle creating karma (Antaraya) : helping others will shed this karma.
◦ Deluding karma (Mohaniya) : nonattachment & non aversion will shed this
karma.
There are four kinds of aghati karma:
◦ Pleasure & pain determining ( vedniya): Compassion and helpfulness towards
others sheds vedniya karma and results in greater happiness.
◦ Body-determining ( nam): Admiring the ugly as well as the beautiful will shed
nam karma and result in a more beautiful appearance.
◦ Status-determining ( gotra) Ex: being proud of one's status will accumulate
gotra karma, and cause one to be born with a lower status in the next life.
◦ Longevity-determining ( ayushya): Killing someone earns ayushya karma, which
results in a shorter lifespan.

For example, a man wants to build a house. The man represents a person’s soul.
The house represents the person’s body. So here the man makes a contract with
three people, one is builder, one is a material supplier and the third is the
electrician & wiring company. These three people represent the three different
karmas.
The builder represents the body rendering karma who builds or constructs the
house or body. So the better the construction, the better the body which means
better health.
The vedaniya is like the material supplier who supplies such things as the drywall
required to build the house or body. So if the supplier supplies bad materials
such as drywall with chemicals, then the house or the body will suffer. For
example, drywall with chemicals will negatively affect the health of the body.
The electrician & wiring person does the wiring and lighting in the house or body.
If the electrician improperly does the lighting or wiring then one mistake can
affect the entire house or body leading to a big disaster. Similarly, negative
emotions can negatively affect the health of your body.
So in conclusion, the construction of a good house requires how well the three
people cooperate together. Similarly, the three karma together decides the good
health of a person.

With every (good & bad) action there are (good &
bad) karmic particles coming and getting
attached to the soul.
Tirthankar Mahavir says to his disciple Gautam,
◦ ‘Payogasaa, no visasaa’
◦ (karma is bound by) effort and not naturally.
They stay in a dormant state for some time
(anudirna).
When the dormant state is over, they become
effective (udaya).
Having done the job they leave (nirjara).

Person imbibes karma (all kinds of karma)
Vedaniy Karma with its +/- vibrations
instigates the body.
Intensity of the karmic bonding is rendered
by Mohaniy Karma.
As per the vibrations of karma, the physical
body (which is a creation of naam karma)
absorbs the particles from the cosmos.
As the particles are received, the person
experiences pleasure and pain.

Evam bhut vedana– Effects as they were bound.
◦ The karma renders the effect as it was destined to be
when it was bound.
◦ For ex: Some karma which were supposed to give an
effect in the form of a particular disease for a particular
time, the person will have to go through the effect.
Anevam bhut vedana– effects with modifications.
◦ The person with meditation or confession and other
spiritual exercises dilutes the karma, so the effect of
karma becomes milder.

•Mantras create a new energy field to

25.
Action leads to karmic bondage.
You reap what you sow!
Karma can be changed or influenced
(sankraman or udirana).
To heal the karmic problem; the healing tools
are spiritual endeavors.
Therapies work if the karmic influence is not
very intense.
The higher the intensity of karma, the greater
the healing required.
