How To Make Money By Promoting Web Hosting Companies
1. How To Make Money By Promoting
Web Hosting Companies
by YourIMFriend
There are couple of reasons why web hosting packages are almost
a perfect product to promote as an affiliate.
Here are just some of them :
Big commissions. In demand product. Huge market.
And here are 8 tips you can start using immediately to make money
by promoting web hosting packages.
1. Think about big commissions. Web hosting packages are lucrative products to
promote simply because companies pay out huge commissions for every referred
sale.
In general, you can expect commissions from $50 to $150 for every sale of “usual”
web hosting packages, like ones on shared hosting, shared VPS servers and similar.
But, commissions can even go up if you refer a sale of a dedicated server. Some
companies pay from $200 to $500 for that type of sale.
Some companies will even increase your commissions if you refer more sales in a
single month, like HostGator. Their starting commission is $50, but if you refer more
than 20 sales in a single month you will earn $125 per sale.
2. Think about huge market and demand. Every website needs a web server. It can’t
function without it. So, every new website owner is your potential customer.
OK, most of them already have a web hosting account, but that doesn’t matter.
Majority of them will be willing to transfer their website to a new web server if you
can give them a better deal.
The thing with web hosting is very similar to mobile networks. You can use one, but
if another network gives you a better deal, it’s most likely you will switch to them,
right? Similar happens with website owners when it comes to web hosting.
2. Also, web hosting is usually paid monthly, or in some type quarterly or yearly deals.
If you can offer a package with lower monthly cost, people might be willing to switch
their accounts in order to lower their cost.
On top of that, many website owners (like me) want to have separate web hosting
accounts for each website. Back in the past, when IP addresses of web servers had
an impact on SEO and search engine rankings, people were purchasing different
web hosting accounts like crazy rabbits.
Today there is no big difference. It’s much easier and safer to have different web
hosting accounts for different websites, and that’s your chance to refer more sales.
You can even structure your promotions around the idea and benefits of having
different web hosting accounts for each website. Talk about benefits of hosting
different websites on separate web hosting accounts. If you do it well, you could get
multiple sales from a single customer.
3. Promote high quality products only. Similar to any other affiliate promotion, you
simply MUST promote high quality products only. If you screw your customer once,
he will never buy from you again.
Nowadays, people have learned to be very suspicious and cautious, competition is
fierce these days, mistakes should be avoided at all costs, so don’t play with your
reputation on the Internet.
Luckily for us, there are enough high quality web hosting companies out there so we
don’t need to worry about that. We can easily find a fair amount of good services
and packages to promote with peace in our minds.
For example, you can’t go wrong with companies like Bluehost and Liquidweb, and
even HostGator, although some people have bad experience with HostGator.
Personally, I’m using HostGator for 5+ years now and never had a single problem
with them.
There are also specialized companies or web hosting services which decided to
create unique “hook” or USP. Like WP Engine by offering high quality web hosting
services specialized for Wordpress sites.
Anyway, if you’re not sure if you should promote some service or not, you can
always search the web for reviews, read them and see what others are talking about
particular service. Based on that you can decide to promote it or not.
3. 4. Spread your “money content” around. You can promote web hosting services in
various ways. Basically all usual marketing and promotional methods will work,
from articles and blog posts to reviews and reports.
However, whatever type of promotional content you create, be sure to spread it
around as far as you can. Nowadays we have hundreds of online places where we
can share our content, from article directories and document sharing sites for
written content, to Youtube and other video sharing sites for video content.
For example, you can write some type of review article for service you’re promoting.
Then you can share it on your blog or website, submit to several biggest article
directories, post to social media profiles (like Facebook, Twitter and others), turn it
into a PDF document and share it on document sharing sites (like Scribd and others),
create a Squidoo lens from it, turn it into presentation and share on Slideshare and
similar sites, produce an audio and video from it and share on Youtube and other
appropriate sites, and so on.
Also, be sure to create some type of “top list” content. Like a short report in which
you’ll give a list of top recommended web hosting services. Include 5 or 10 of them
(or whatever number you prefer) with short description and list of pros and cons of
each one of them. And don’t forget to add your affiliate links.
This type of content is almost required because it allows you to quickly share it with
potential buyers, giving them quick overview of top recommended packages. Since
all of them are your affiliate products, it doesn’t matter which one people choose -
you’re earning commissions for all of them.
So, to sum it up, whatever type of content you create, just be sure to share it
wherever you can. The more instances of your “money content” (which includes
your affiliate links) you have out there, the more money you can make.
Personally, I’m still making money from articles and PDFs I posted to dozens of
sharing sites years ago - although some of distribution channels I was using are
“dead” now.
But, when you put content out there, that content will work for you for years to
come, literally on autopilot.
5. Think outside the box. When you’re promoting services and products like web
hosting packages, you need to think outside the box. What I mean by that? Don’t
focus only on the Internet. Think about who can profit from such services.
4. Like local businesses, for example. No matter where you live, I’m pretty sure there
are at least dozen of local businesses who either have a website or don’t.
If they don’t have a website, your job is even easier. You just need to convince them
how important is to have a website. And when you do that, you can sell them even
more than just a web hosting account.
If they already have a website, you need to give them a reason to switch to web
hosting company you’re promoting. It can be done through special deals - like giving
them free consultation about online marketing, web design, SEO or related services,
or something similar - or it can be done through showing them benefits of web
hosting you’re promoting which is, for some reason, better than what they are
already using.
For example, I’ve tested this idea in my city. It was a combination of direct mail and
reviews. In one instance I’ve created a simple review report, turned it into a PDF
document and shared it with local business owners. I sent them an email telling
them how important web hosting is, what they should look for, which features and
benefits are important, and so on.
Around 17% of them either bought a new web hosting package through that report,
either contacted me about the process of transferring their files to a new web server.
I offered them a free transfer service and got nice commissions.
There are other “out of the box” methods you can use to promote web hosting
packages. You can think of some of them on your own, based on your current
experience, position or environment.
For example, you can register so-called “affiliate domains” and share them around.
Let me explain... If you’re promoting HostGator, you can register domain name
GetHostGator.com(which probably isn’t available but you got the point), and set it
up so it redirects to your affiliate link.
Then you can share that domain with everyone you know. You can create flyers, ads,
brochures, reports and other promotional material, and share it everywhere online
or around your city. All you have to include is your “affiliate domain” and that’s it.
People will either click it or type it into their browser, and when they do that and
purchase, you’ll get a commission.
6. Think about review sites. Review sites are always a great way to sell products as an
affiliate. It can be a simple site with several reviews, or a bigger site with reviews,
articles, videos and more related content.
5. Review sites are made for people who know what they want or need, but they also
want to get more information about their desired product. Or they want to get better
view on all the benefits of various related products, or insider view on top rated
provider of their desired product.
Now, review sites are topic for itself, so I won’t go deep about that topic here. There
are various ways how you can create review sites, so please refer to other tutorials
and courses on that subject.
I just want to point out that review sites can work pretty good for promoting web
hosting companies. Your reviews can be short or long - it’s up to you. Just be sure to
list all the features and benefits of each provider you’re promoting, including all
pros and cons you can find about each service.
It’s also always good to add personal touch to your reviews. Share your experiences
if you have them. Share your personal thoughts. Add extra content to your reviews,
like guiding people through sign up process and similar.
If you don’t have your own experiences with particular web hosting provider, search
the web and find reviews from other people, then quote them in your reviews. Give
your visitors a valid reason to believe you and purchase through your affiliate links.
7. Think about bonuses. Besides reviews, you can offer bonuses for those who decide
to purchase particular web hosting offer through your link. Bonuses usually go
hand-in-hand with reviews, but you can also do them on your own.
Think about what you can offer for free to those who buy through your link. That
can vary depending on the market you’re “talking” to.
If you’re running a specialized promotion to local businesses, then your bonus needs
to be related to them and their needs. As I already said, it can be something like: free
transfer service, free consultation, free website development (with Wordpress), free
domain name (you can afford to pay $10 for registering a new domain name for
potential customers if they purchase something that brings you $50 or $100 in
commissions, right?), and so on.
If you’re offering bonus on the web to general audience, then your bonus should be
general too. Again, it could be something like: free domain name registration, or free
website development consultation (over Skype), free transfer service (all details can
be arranged through email), or you can offer some type of report or ebook as a
bonus.
6. 8. Use social media to find potential buyers. Social networking sites like Facebook,
Twitter, LinkedIn and others are very popular these days. People use them every day
for all types of communication - including those about things they need.
It’s not rare that people openly speak about products and services they are
interested in, like software, products or - web hosting packages. It’s not rare that
people will openly ask for recommendations on the best web hosting offers.
If you can intercept those conversations and give them your opinion and advice,
they could buy through your affiliate link and you could earn nice commission.
There were several ebooks and reports on using Twitter for finding potential buyers
of web hosting packages. They were popular several years ago but similar principles
can work these days too, and not only on Twitter but on other social media sites too.
In short, the idea was to use Twitter’s search function to find tweets that contain
word “hosting” or “web hosting”. Then you can see what author is tweeting about
and, if he or she is searching for web hosting recommendations, you can easily reply
to their tweet with your message.
Of course, you won’t spam them with direct links and offers. Be gentle. Be
reasonable. Be friendly and helpful. If you find people who are searching for
recommendations, point them to your review website, or review articles, review
videos or whatever you have.
This is also situation when your “top list” report can work like charm, which is why I
previously said that you should create that type of content. In this situation you can
simply share download link to that report with potential buyer, along with contact
information and helpful comment.
You can also offer them additional help through personal 1-on-1 consultations
through email, phone or Skype. People will like that, which means they will be more
likely to buy through your affiliate link and get you that so-wanted commission.
How To Get Your Affiliate Business
To The Whole New Level
Although you’re “just” going to promote web hosting packages which are usually just
one-time purchases, as an affiliate it’s important and smart to have your own list of
potential customers.
7. You see, not everyone who you contact through various marketing techniques will
purchase recommended web hosting package immediately. Most of them will just
look at your content and move to something else.
In other words, you will most likely lose majority of potential buyers.
However, if you drive most of your traffic to your squeeze page, give your visitors
something useful and helpful (free report, ebook, video or anything else) in
exchange for their email address, you will have them on your list and you will be
able to contact them in the future, offer them more content, more resources and
special deals, thus giving them additional chances to buy from you.
But, in order to be able to build your list of people interested in web hosting - which
may also be interested in other services, tools and products related to web
development, which gives you a chance to sell them more stuff - you MUST have an
autoresponder account.
